The queue at Bourke Street Bakery

The queue at Bourke Street Bakery

It’s 10.30am on a Saturday and this is a familiar sight at Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills. 10.30am is when the hot foods like lamb sausage rolls and beef pies are fresh out from the oven. The queue can be long but this bakery has the system down packed. Almost everyone in the queue knows what they want and so service is quick and efficient.

We were too late on our first visit to BSB and ended up with a mushroom & goats cheese quiche , ham & cheese croissant and finished off with a custard and prune tart. All really good. The pastry really shone. So light, buttery and just goes poof in the mouth. I was not too sure about the croissant. Might have to try it again. And the custard in the prune tart was really light but you know it isn’t :)

On my second visit, I finally got to try the pork & fennel sausage roll, beef brisket, red wine & mushroom pie and finished off with a ginger brulee tart. It’s the pastry that makes the sausage roll and pies here. But there is so much flavour in the filling. Every mouthful is just joyous. The ginger brulee tart was the perfect finish to our breakfast. A must try if you are in the area. How is this for conicidence? This was the weekend that both Mister and I bumped into Mish (from Melbourne) and her family! How cool is that?

Now, Bourke Street Bakery is our local bakery. It can’t get any better than that. Sausage rolls, pies, custard tarts can be had anytime we like. And so last weekend, we picked up a slice of carrot cake before heading off to run our errands. I tried baking this carrot cake from the cookbook last year and was really happy with the results. So what did I think after I tried the real thing? My carrot cake is a far cry from perfection. The carrot cake from BSB is super moist and light. Even the chunky walnuts had flavour? I must try baking it again since I have new colleagues as my guinea pigs :)

Super moist carrot cake from Bourke.

Mister wants to go through every single item at this bakery…. we probably could. I better start climbing up and down the hill more often.

Psst… even David Lebovitz that was visiting Sydney gave BSB a super big thumbs up. No wonder the queue is getting longer and longer. Lucky for me, it is just a skip and hop away from us. :)

Man… You’re so darn lucky for staying dead smack centre of the HUB of food central in Sydney! With BSB just a stone’s throw away, I don’t think I would hardly ever bake pies or pastries again hehehe… Not long before you get to try the WHOLE menu. So many things I haven’t tried. FUN!!

Who am I kidding? What an awesome place as your local! Wish I could go there more often.
