Lisa and I bumped into each in the twitter world. She is a Malaysian chick that owns the blog, Chewak and she writes about her views on relationships and whatever else that happens to and around her. It is her personal diary and I find it really refreshing as she is very transparent about her views. She has recently arrived in Melbourne to start a new adventure and thought it would be nice to get her to pen her views about Melbourne and what she thought of the food so far.
So thanks again Lisa for supporting my blog and for accepting to be my guest blogger. It is always interesting to have a different perspective for a place that I grew to call home.

Hi, I am Lisa and I write about my own thoughts, life experiences, events and food. I have been blogging for many years but Chewak is just going to be 1 year old this Nov 2, 2009. I am Malaysian Chinese and have been living in Malaysia for many years before decided to move down under this year.
Thanks to Penny aka Jeroxie for inviting me to blog in her addictive blog. You know what Penny, my stomach always growls whenever I visit here, bad of you (kidding).
Many of my friends and family said with such intensity that I will be missing the authentic Malaysia food for sure when I moved down under, and I believed them for awhile. However I have to oppose to such notion after being here for few months. Why? The abundance of food that comes with so many varieties from many countries in Melbourne, not to forget the wine, make me worried about the pounds that I am gaining now! The fact that I can get so many type of cheap good food makes me a happy pig here! The thing I like about the food here is that we can get many types of authentic European and Asian food. And it’s just not about someone (locals) who learns to cook them and sell it here, but they came from their hometown bringing over their own recipes and opens restaurant here. Thus this makes them very authentic indeed. On top of that, finding so many types of wine and sake makes me a happier person as well.
However, I wouldn’t say I won’t miss some good food back in Malaysia though as I still yet to find a good Bak Kut Teh (Pork Bone Tea Soup) in Melbourne, so I am missing a good Bak Kut Teh big time now!
I had a great time in
.Also, in Pie in The Sky in Mt Dandenong.
I have tried a few places that I did blog about it after, but there is a list of outdated blog about food that I’ve yet to post. LOL, I guess I am just too lazy to upload too many photos.
- Yum Cha in Plume Restaurant, Doncaster
- Hutong Dumpling Bar in Melbourne CBD
- Pancake Dessert House in Melbourne
I think I should post all the places that I’ve been for good food the soonest possible.
Thanks Penny for such an honour to share my ‘addiction’ with you and your readers.
And thanks Lisa, I just love your honesty and unpretentious posts. I am sure there will be many many more stories to hear from you
So what kind of food do you yearn for when you are away from home?

What I miss: since I moved to Melbourne in July, I still haven't found a good char kuay teow (or a good laska – made hard because I am vegan. most places go too kelapa, not enough assam)
I think I could still relate even if I'm actually home. But I do miss the other foods where I used in live which was Vancouver. The truth is they have better dimsum in Vancouver then in Metro Manila. I believe it's invasion of HK people last 1997. I also miss the Farmer's Market in Vancouver. They are way so much better than here. And I also miss some authentic Swiss food in Switzerland. Nice to meet you Lisa. Nice choice Penny.
Lovely post!
I personally miss everything my mother cooks even though I make it myself here. It's that bit of 'extra' that you can't get on your own
. AS for home as in Portland, Oregon where I used to live, I miss the cheese there. Tillamook Cheese is the best
Many of my friends living up here in Brisbane said to me, "If you go to Melbourne, you'll love it." I believe it's true.
I went to Melbourne many years ago. I still remember there were many restaurants offer authentic, ethnic foods in different suburbs. You guys are very lucky and can taste so many delicious foods at cheap price whenever you want.
Vegemite sandwiches, Tim Tams, Caramello Koalas, Strawberry Freddos and Darrell Lea Liquorice Allsorts….
@steph – It is a little hard since you are a vegan but I found the char kuay teow at Laksa Me pretty good!
@Divina – Thanks. I miss bits of each country that I visit. I know I will miss the babi guling and bebek in Bali when I leave.
@Rochelle – True. Mum is a terrible cook but I still miss her soups!
@Christine – We are very spoilt for choices. So many different foods here but I do crave nice tropical fruits at times and they are expensive. Like mangosteen, starfruit and rambutan.
@Mardi – Too may huh!!
Nice to read more about Lisa.
Looks like a fun trip so far!
Loved the flickr album!
