Three Blue Ducks, Bronte

Summer is officially over. Summer in Sydney this year has been a bit of a let down. This trip to Bronte for a early breakfast before heading to Bondi was one of the few and also maybe the last tanning trip to the beach this year. I hope not! Please let there be one more blast of beautiful warm sun on a weekend.

Three Blue Ducks seems to be a really popular breakfast, brunch and lunch cafe in Bronte. I have read on blogs and on twitter that this cafe can get packed out quite quickly. I guess it must be true since it is the winner of the 2011 Sydney Herald’s Sun Best Breakfast Cafe award. Anyway, when a cafe is popular in Sydney, there is ALWAYS a queue. Mister and I beat the queue as it was a Saturday and we were there before 9am.

Mister and I managed the last table on the laneway at the side of the cafe. It is a pretty cool spot with a splash of graffiti on one side of the wall. It has a very casual atmosphere and it seems that the wait staff here are all young golden beach boys. And it is places like these that reminds me a little of Melbourne. Casual, friendly and no hint of air.

It is always a good excuse to have a big breakfast before a day out at the beach. Both Mister and I certainly did not hold back. But we first started off with strong piccolo each. The piccolo had a nice deep aroma. It was pleasant.

I could not go past black pudding on a menu. I ordered the scrambled eggs with black pudding, dill cucumber yoghurt salad and red currant jam. It was served with toasted Iggy’s sourdough bread. I was really impressed with the soft, fluffy scrambled eggs. I would have preferred if the black pudding had a heavier suggestion of spices but that is personally preference. I hardly had of the yoghurt salad. Not sure if it was necessary. I guess it added some freshness and lightness against the quite dense flavoured black pudding. I do love the red currant jam. It was not sweet and definitely tied the dish together. ($21)

Mister ordered the poached eggs, spinach, hollandaise sauce and ocean trout. The trout was cooked to perfection with a nice crispy skin and is super fresh. All the elements on this dish was well executed. The poached eggs started to gooey and ozzy. I love the generous basil garnishes. Mister just loved everything on the plate. I reckon anyone would be completed satisfied after this big breakfast and ready for the day at the beach. ($21.50)

The food and service is great. I like the fact that this little cafe tries to source as much local produce as possible. I will come back here again but most likely for dinner. They have recently started opening for dinners on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It will be interesting to taste the difference between a day and night menu.
