Beautiful Sydney Autumn
Still less than one year. So I am still allowed to be a “tourist”. This part of Potts Point is beautiful. I love the look and feel of the old buildings. It is such a pretty street but I wonder how peaceful it is with Kings Cross just a hop and skip away as well. Regardless, it was a beautiful day when Mister and I took a drive down to Potts Point to catch up with @thebreg at The Fish Shop. It is the new venture from the Merivale Group. I reckon they are taking over Sydney one restaurant, one hotel, one bar/club at a time.
Mister and I were contemplating if we should cycle but decided against as we were running late and also was not sure if there was an outdoor area and if there was a place to park the bike. After this visit, we are certain that there is an outdoor area with proper heating and a couple of trees nearby for the bikes. And if there isn’t a space to sit outside so that we can watch out for our bikes, then takeaway it is then! By the way, you can’t call and then collect. You will need to walk in and order.
The drink list is quite impressive but then it does have a bar inside that comes alive in the evening. I would have love to try a cocktail but with errands to run and things to cook, it was best left for another day. Instead, we ordered a coconut water to share. Wish they have given us a thin long spoon to scrap the sides of the young coconut flesh.
There is a specials board that display the “catch of the day”. We ordered the school prawns from the board. It worked as a nice little starter. The school prawns were crisp and crunchy. I love the house made mayonaise sauce. Highly addictive and if you are enjoying this with beef, cider or sparkling, you might have to order 2 serves!
The calm and potato soup or rather clam chowder is served in a metal cup and good for one but we shared everything. I love the light creaminess and the juiciness and saltiness of the fat clams.
So what about the fish and chips? This is after all, The Fish Shop. The chips are good. Crunchy exterior and soft fluffy insides. The fish is fresh but the batter was not as crisp as I like it to be. It felt a little soggy. The house made tartare was actually the star. It has nice chunky gherkins in them. It has inspired me to make my own. Maybe the rest of the fish dishes are great but this fish & chips is not that great.
And I should not forget the celeriac coleslaw. I never thought of using celeriac and it was perfect. The slaw is fresh. It has texture and the whole autumn feeling about it. This is one of the best slaw that I have tasted for a long time. Don’t overlook this humble side dish.
I have saved the best of the last. This is no ordinary ice cream sandwich. We can’t really work out the ice cream. It is not vanilla but more peachy vanilla flavour. The dark chocolate biscuit is soft and crumbly and melts as it hits the mouth. But it was the salted caramel sauce that brought everything together. Oh so yum! There was no other words except ohh and hmmm and yummm on the table.
Mister and I will definitely be back for more. It is not too far to ride from Surry and will love to explore this neighbourhood a little more.
