Streetsmart – CafeSmart Project and Jeroxie turns 2

by jeroxie June 8, 2011

Most Melbournians woke up to 4°C super cold morning today. I was super rugged up. Thick woolie scarfs, big buffy jacket and woollen tights kept me fairly warm. And even then I was complaining about the cold winter day. I will stick my little finger sticks out in the cold air and she shrunk right back into the warm pockets of my jacket. And did I mention that I had the luxury of hiding most of the day in the very well heated office in South Melbourne.

Cafe Vue, Airport

by jeroxie June 5, 2011

Finally. Good drinkable coffee and pretty decent food at the Melbourne International Airport. Great for International outbound passengers. But for the domestic flights, we will still have to put up with crap coffee. For the first time in many years, I was excited to get to the airport earlier so that we could check in and have enough time to check out Cafe Vue, have a nice coffee and breakfast before heading for our long haul flight to San Francisco.

Don Too, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie June 2, 2011

So many have gone before me. So many have sang high praises of Don Too. Many claims that Don Too serves one of the best ramen in Melbourne. Mister and myself will be really hard judges especially after our trip to Vancouver and New York. We had some of the best ramen that we ever tasted in the 2 cities. So how does Don Too ramen stack up against them? Were we doomed to be disappointed?

Mornington Peninsula – The Itinerary

by jeroxie May 29, 2011

We took about 500 photos. I spent about 2 hours downloading them onto my Mac and getting rid of those that just do not make the cut. The weather was not our friend this weekend. Saturday was wet and cold. Sunday was just cold but at least we had a glimpse of the blue skies. [...]

Beatrix, North Melbourne

by jeroxie May 19, 2011

Our first Saturday back in Melbourne. We are settled back into our Melbournian lifestyle. Saturday means late breakfast somewhere nice or new and farmers market either before or after. And this case, it was after. I have to admit that we were rather brave to venture out into the rain and cold. What is better than a warm bed? What is this Beatrix that made me crawl out of bed? I wanted to try out a new cafe and for some reason, I had a morning sweet tooth. I hardly like sweet stuff for breakfast and even for lunch. But I went with the flow.

MissChu Tuckshop, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie April 23, 2011

MissChu tuckshop is the new super hyped eatery in the city. It serves popular Vietnamese food like Pho and rice paper rolls. It seems that at one point, twerps were going a little gaga over it. Since I had the forced luxury of time before leaving for holiday, I decided to head down and check it out. Anh (@anhsfoodblog) was my lunch buddy and it was really good to catch up with her since we last met for mooncake making session last year.

The downhill of Coconut House

by jeroxie April 3, 2011

Mister and I thought it was a good idea to head back to Coconut House ( read here and here) for a visit. It has been awhile and I did have a craving for a nice wonton noodle which I had the last time and raved about it. But I guess from the title of this post, you know that this isn’t going to be a pretty post. I am not as critical about my food as many. Even if it is ordinary, I am quite happy to eat it and hate wasting food. So what happen that made me feel my plate unfinished and totally disgusted by the whole experience?

Huxtable, Collingwood

by jeroxie March 30, 2011

This particular catch up with a friend is long time coming. We have been planning this for ages but life always get into the way and now she is leaving Melbourne soon for a new adventure. Sometimes when the travel bug bites you, it is time to leave all the familarity and comfort behind and venture into unknowns. Moving countries is a big deal. When I came over from Singapore to pursue my education here, it did not occur to me or my parents that I would stay on. I was young when I landed in Melbourne with 2 suitcases and 1 computer. It was scary but exciting at the same time. Learning about the place, the culture and meeting new people. Everything was exciting and new.

Garden Tuscany, Moonee Ponds

by jeroxie March 23, 2011

Mister sent me an email one afternoon with a link to The Age. He was excited. And then I received an email from Ricky (son) asking if I like to come down and check out the place. After a couple of emails, our visit was penciled in.

Garden Tuscany in Moonee Ponds is really something special. The owners of the cafe have been living in the house infront of the cafe since 1972. Both are immigrants from Italy. They got married and then raised their children and now the back area is turned into this very unique cafe that serves fantastic food and drinks. All the ingredients are from local suppliers and they believe in recycling and tries hard to create a greener environment.

Twestival Melbourne

by jeroxie March 21, 2011

“Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but work from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact. Over 200 international cities from Buenos Aires to Bangalore, Seattle to Seoul and Hong Kong to Honolulu have participated in Twestival.
The good news is that this year we will host the Twestival Local! This is a great opportunity to bring the community together. The day is about more than fundraising, but all money raised will go directly to a local charity, that means 100% of the funds will be spent in Melbourne!”

Entre Tapas y Vino, St. Kilda

by jeroxie March 15, 2011

Deal of the day type business are popping up everywhere the moment. As a consumer, I am not complaining. I get a good deal for stuff that I need anyway. Just don’t go overboard and start collecting these deals that you never use or just because it is a good deal. You will find yourself overspending and not saving money at all. And also you need to make sure that you make that booking as soon as possible. The dates fill up very quickly and you might just miss out on getting a date you want before the expiry date.

SBS Food Journey 2011

by jeroxie March 9, 2011

SBS Food Journey Festival 2011 is about multi-cultural food journey and is held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton. I was very fortunate to be part of the contingent of food bloggers that were invited to document parts of the event on behalf of SBS. From our knowledge, we had Adrian, Cherrie, Thanh, Shellie and myself on duty that day.
