Saint Honore Cake Shop, Haymarket

by jeroxie January 11, 2012

I have not tried many cakes in this old skool Chinatown cake shop before but it is a safe bet that I will be making return trips very often. Saint Honore Cake Shop reminds me of my grandma. When I was a little girl, there are countless times that grandma and I will head over to our local confectionery to pick up bouncy white bread and also cream cakes. It isn’t important that the cake may be a little dry or need a little more cream but these are comfort cakes to me. These cakes take me back to a good place.

Yum Cha at Marigold, Sydney CBD

by jeroxie December 27, 2011

It’s our first boxing day in Sydney and the first time in years that we woke up feeling chirpy. There was no hangover from binge drinking as we would have in Melbourne. Our Christmas had been quiet without our good ‘orphan’ friends to hang out with. We started the day with a nice exploration ride around the neighbourhood and around Botanical gardens. The weather was cool and the sight of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge felt strangely serene.

Izakaya Fujiyama, Surry Hills

by jeroxie December 20, 2011

Living in Surry Hills means that we do not have to travel far for a nice dinner. We decided on Izakaya Fujiyama. It is nicely stocked with imported sake and beer. But it also holds a short selection of wines and cocktails. The space is nice and airy with an outdoor eating. We decided to [...]

Black Star Pastry, Newtown

by jeroxie December 14, 2011

Many say that Newtown is the Melbournian part of Sydney. Many say that it is just like Collingwood that stretches for 9.1km. In my opinion, the main road of Newtown which is King Street is nothing like Collingwood. However, the side streets of Newtown and Darlington do have a sense of Melbourne that I love and miss dearly. There are little characteristics like small corner cafes decked out in old and adhoc pieces of furniture and people wheeling or carrying their baskets to Eveleigh farmers market at Carriage Works. But once you enter Carriage Works, there is a realisation that this is Sydney and not Melbourne. Well, this farmers market is dog friendly and no more muddy paws from Tekkie when it rains

El Loco, Surry Hills

by jeroxie December 7, 2011

It has been raining almost everyday in Sydney. So when there was a window of sunshine, we went out to play. Mister was craving for a beer and I, after some tacos. One of the perks of living in Surry is that we do not have to go far to find good and decent food. There are cafes, restaurants, bars or pubs just around the corner. El Loco has been on my hit list. Since the sun was behaving, Mister and I took the opportunity and skipped down to El Loco one rare sunny Sunday afternoon for a late lunch.

Cafe Mint, Surry Hills

by jeroxie November 21, 2011

Great. Really great. Cafes, restaurants, shopping, grocers, hairdressers and even dog salons are all within walking distance. Many may say that Surry Hills is pretentious but we are “fresh from the boat” from Melbourne and so this suburb is perfect for us. I mean how can I say no to Bourke Street Bakery as my local bakery? Seriously.

Discovery – Cheap eats in Sydney

by jeroxie October 9, 2011

If you are travelling on a budget in Sydney, living by yourself, a student or just want food cheap, fast and delicious, then these 2 places have your name stamped all over it. It is actually true to say that eating in Sydney costs more than Melbourne. I was up in Sydney for 5 days and it was wise to start watching out spending. The interstate move from Melbourne is going to be crazy expensive. If anyone has any better ideas, feel free to pass them over.

Black & White Wednesday #6 – Fishy

by jeroxie September 21, 2011

I love the Sydney Fish Market. When I went up to Sydney with Mum and Mister a couples of weeks ago, we visited the fish market again. And again I took so many photos of fresh seafood. I can’t enough of it. It is always the highlight of my trip to Sydney. If I had to choose one protein to eat for the rest of my life, it will be seafood.

A September weekend in Sydney

by jeroxie September 13, 2011

I always have the best intention of writing a blog post for each of the places that I eat but never have the time. This is a quick round up and highlights of this trip. I can only hope that I have time to sit and write every single place I went.

I can’t remember the last time I travelled and flew in a plane with mum. It must have been when I was a little girl and she would take me for trips during school breaks. And tables have changed and now I am taking her to Sydney for a weekend away and hope that she loves the weather better than Melbourne. Mister and I are trying our hardest to convince her to come live with us.

Fresh seafood everywhere – Sydney Fish Market

by jeroxie September 19, 2010

We knew that it will be another full day of eating so we decided to walk from Darlinghurst to the Sydney Fish Market (Pyrmont NSW). It took us about 35mins. Not too bad and it was a nice interesting walk. Walking through the CBD and then over the Anzac Bridge to get to the markets.

The search of the best tonkotsu ramen in Melbourne

by jeroxie March 7, 2010

A call to all Melbournians – Where is your favourite ramen shop?
I am not sure when Mister started his craze for Ramen, in particular, Tonkotsu. I thought long and hard and it seems that Menya Noodle Bar in Sydney is the culprit. Mister discovered this place while on a short visit up in Sydney. The next time we were up there, he insisted that we had to pay homage to this place.

Before I carry on with my rambles, let me briefly explain what tonkotsu is. It is a cloudy pork soup base. It’s cloudiness comes from being cooked with crushed pork bones for hours. Hence, its porky aroma and heavy pork tastes in its broth.
