Izakaya Fujiyama, Surry Hills

by jeroxie December 20, 2011

Living in Surry Hills means that we do not have to travel far for a nice dinner. We decided on Izakaya Fujiyama. It is nicely stocked with imported sake and beer. But it also holds a short selection of wines and cocktails. The space is nice and airy with an outdoor eating. We decided to [...]

Black Star Pastry, Newtown

by jeroxie December 14, 2011

Many say that Newtown is the Melbournian part of Sydney. Many say that it is just like Collingwood that stretches for 9.1km. In my opinion, the main road of Newtown which is King Street is nothing like Collingwood. However, the side streets of Newtown and Darlington do have a sense of Melbourne that I love and miss dearly. There are little characteristics like small corner cafes decked out in old and adhoc pieces of furniture and people wheeling or carrying their baskets to Eveleigh farmers market at Carriage Works. But once you enter Carriage Works, there is a realisation that this is Sydney and not Melbourne. Well, this farmers market is dog friendly and no more muddy paws from Tekkie when it rains

El Loco, Surry Hills

by jeroxie December 7, 2011

It has been raining almost everyday in Sydney. So when there was a window of sunshine, we went out to play. Mister was craving for a beer and I, after some tacos. One of the perks of living in Surry is that we do not have to go far to find good and decent food. There are cafes, restaurants, bars or pubs just around the corner. El Loco has been on my hit list. Since the sun was behaving, Mister and I took the opportunity and skipped down to El Loco one rare sunny Sunday afternoon for a late lunch.

The Star – Flying Fish and Chips & Adriano Zumbo Patissier

by jeroxie November 29, 2011

It has been raining almost continuously for the past week in Sydney. It has been wet and at times, cold. I needed an umbrella to get around and many times, I wore a beanie instead. I don’t like carrying an umbrella and having the fear of losing it. I mean, how many brollys have you [...]

Cafe Mint, Surry Hills

by jeroxie November 21, 2011

Great. Really great. Cafes, restaurants, shopping, grocers, hairdressers and even dog salons are all within walking distance. Many may say that Surry Hills is pretentious but we are “fresh from the boat” from Melbourne and so this suburb is perfect for us. I mean how can I say no to Bourke Street Bakery as my local bakery? Seriously.

Yummy yummy Bourke Street Bakery, Surry Hills

by jeroxie November 17, 2011

It’s 10.30am on a Saturday and this is a familiar sight at Bourke Street Bakery in Surry Hills. 10.30am is when the hot foods like lamb sausage rolls and beef pies are fresh out from the oven. The queue can be long but this bakery has the system down packed. Almost everyone in the queue [...]

Revisit – Miss Jackson, St. Kilda

by jeroxie October 11, 2011

I took my mum on a round about car ride to the St. Kilda farmers market. With Mister away, I have been relying on the Tomtom to guide me to places. However with a destination that does not exactly have an actual address, it makes it really difficult. For me. I really regret the times that I am so busy tweeting while Mister and not looking at where he is driving, what roads he uses and all the stuff that drivers are aware of.

Gumshara Ramen, Haymarket

by jeroxie October 1, 2011

Many have come before me and raved about it. It is a very well known fact that ramen in Sydney is definitely far superior than in Melbourne. I have been to Sydney many times and yet never had the chance to hit the infamous Gumshara Ramen. This very popular ramen outlet is located in a food court in Haymarket. This is the first time that Mister and I are taking a lunch break together in Sydney. I am sure the novelty will wear off but for now, I am embracing it. It was about a 5 minutes walk from my office on Kent Street to Haymarket. I was expecting a long queue but was pleasantly surprise that the wait was not too bad.

L’atelier de Monsieur Truffe, Brunswick

by jeroxie September 25, 2011

I had a rather bad weekend for me recently. It was the same weekend when I made chipotle chicken wings to distract myself from feeling pissed off. I had a stupid fight with @mamajeroxie and so instead of having breakfast together, I took my keys and headed out by myself to chill out. My temper has been quite short lately and take too many things too seriously. I was losing my sense of fun lately.

Nabiha Cafe, Moonee Ponds

by jeroxie September 22, 2011

How well do you know your local and its surrounding cafes or restaurants?

For me, it is a big fat failure. I only learnt about Nabiha Cafe on twitter as I was whinging about the awful coffee that I had at 20 Young Street Cafe. The coffee had a rancid taste and it was burnt! Life is too short for bad coffee. Anyway, @NatStockley mentioned that their coffee is indeed sub standard but serve pretty good sandwiches. I was in no mood for sandwiches after that sip of coffee. But he did offer a tip to check out Nabiha for their coffee.

Rumi, Brunswick East

by jeroxie September 1, 2011

Mister and I hardly stay apart from each other for long periods of time. He means the world to me and I know that he feels the same about me. It has been hard having him gone for long periods of time now. And especially when I do need him the most at the moment, it is even harder. It is good that @mamajeroxie is here with me at the moment. However, it means that I lack a lot of time alone to make decisions and think about my next steps.

Malaysia Kitchen Blogger Summit – Lim’s Nyonya Hut

by jeroxie August 21, 2011

In the third week of the Malaysia Kitchen Blogger Summit, I will like to introduce a cuisine much closer to my heart – The Peranakan, the Straits Chinese or also known as Nyonya or Nonya. There are 3 countries in the world where most Peranakan lives – Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The Peranakan is a marriage of Chinese settlers to local Malays. The Peranakan itself is vaguely divided into two main groups. The ones in the East coast (Kelantan and Terengganu) which are more Malay influenced and the ones in the West coast like Malacca which are more Chinese influence. The communities in both Penang and Singapore were established later. There is so much history behind this very special, vibrant and fusion culture and I am so proud to be part of it.

Duchess of Spotswood, Spotswood

by jeroxie August 16, 2011

The Duchess of Spotswood. With a name like this, it is clear that this cafe is steered towards something a little more English. And with a name like this, you will think it will sit in a rather posh area and not a quiet and plain looking street like Hudsons. The name does not matter to me. It is the food that counts. This place has been receiving raving reviews from many food bloggers. The curiosity finally overcome my laziness and we decided that it might just be worth the effort.

M.Wells Diner, Long Island City

by jeroxie July 14, 2011

I love watching American TV and movies when I was a kid. In many of those movies and sitcoms, there are usually diners that serves big ass hamburgers, a sides of fries and milkshakes and never ending supply of filtered black coffee. The Diner is really American. So when I asked on twitter where I should go in new York City and one of the answer that came back was M.Wells Diner in Long Island City, it became a big yes from me.
