Kappaya is all about simple organic Japanese soul food. It is quietly tucked away in the convent and just next to Lentils as Anything. The menu is small and simple. The shoebox interior is narrow and dimly lighted. It will probably fit 12 people snugly. The outside will be a much nicer place to be in summer.

I had a short stint at Lau’s kitchen when I just got out of uni and needed extra cash and saving up for a house. II Fornio is just located next to Lau’s but I’ve never had any interest in trying it out. And of course it didn’t help that I worked in the evenings and it’s closed by the time I got in. But even with the lunch shift that I had, it didn’t seem appealing at that time. Or maybe I was just a poor graduate that was trying to save up money for a house so anything that looks fanciful would have been to expensive for me

Move forward to 2010, hangover and dehydrated from a night’s out of fun, Billy, Mister and I made the effort to finally pay this a visit. Our visit was definitely motivated by the fact that this place has been recently acquired by St. Ali and Philippa Sibley is rocking their ovens.

They are all a little more pricey, catered for the tourists and food is usually underwhelming. That is my personal opinion of course. The place looked particular empty for a Friday night and especially if there was a Family Roast Dinner promotion for the month. We ordered our drinks and looked around the room. No one was having roast? The waitress was also dumbfounded that we mentioned that we pre-ordered our lamb roast. There was no promotion and nor roast!

Langham is located in Southbank and just a hop and skip across the Yarra River from Flinders Street station. It was a rather cold and foggy winter morning and I am thankful that there is a hint of blue skies when I took this photo.

We have been there on several occassions and it is a nice casual pub that serves good food, beers and even has a decent wine list. The pub is spilt into 3 areas. The front area where it houses the pool table and some high and low tables. The proper dining room area is at the back where usually customers with booking are served. And there is a lovely small courtyard area for those that choose to sit outdoors.

I overheard on twitter that this little Italian restaurant, Sosta Cucina, serves up some awesome food. It was also featured in an article called “Australian chef’s favourite Italian dishes” in Gourmet Traveller. I am a big fan of the Italian cuisine. In many ways, I feel that it has some similar philosophy as the Chinese cooking and culture. I feel a nice connection. What do you think? I mean, we both love our noodles or pasta as the Italians call it.

Anyway, Mister and I have not been on a date for awhile so we I decided that we should go on one. This means that I get to dress up a little and took this opportunity to wear my deep red boots for the very first time. Don't get the wrong idea! It is a tall boots with furry lining. So comfortable. Just perfect for cold winter nights and with a little heel, it does make me feel quite special.

I walk past Panette many times during South Melbourne market weekdays. It always seem packed with breakfast and lunch crowd. So I took the opportunity to visit this place when Mr. S said to catch up for lunch.

I ordered the meatball linguine. It was a mixture of slow cooked veal and pork meatballs with linguine in tomato sugo and topped with thin slices of Parmesan cheese. The meatballs were very juicy and flavourful. It was a very decent plate of pasta. I will give it a benefit of a doubt that the pasta is freshly made or else it means that it is very over cooked!By the way, I like how the sugo coats the pasta. Great consistency.

We have not visited Coconut House after its recent renovation. We walked past it several times as we head to Rose Garden at times for lunch. Coconut House is hardly empty. It is always buzzing and I think even more so after its renovation. What caught my eye that fateful Saturday was the poster of a bowl of wonton noodles. I must have it. A little queue won't kill right?

Both of us have a soft spot for cendol and was please to find it on the new menu. The Coconut House Cendol Special was served with soya bean and gula malacca (palm sugar). It was not as we expected. The cendol was not well made and just did not work with the soya bean. It is probably more healthy than having coconut milk instead but soya bean lacked the flavour.

I love the bread. And the olive oil from Chapman Hill was perfect. Slightly fruity, quite delicate and complimented the bread flavour. It has been tough for him and I can imagine the change in lifestyle has also changed him. I was always this weird anticipation before catching up with friends that I have not met for awhile. Will we still be able to just pick up from where we left off? Do you ever have this feeling?

Anyway, the day we caught up was the day that Mister and I spent the day with #ramenhunters. After a day of eating, it was unthinkable that we could consume anymore food. We settled for Korean BBQ. I could at least choose to nibble on pieces of meat and not feel self conscious.

It seems that most people that I know on twitter have been raving about Miss Jackson. It had been one of the little cafes that I have been keened to try and to understand what makes this place so special. I knew from reading tweets that Miss Jackson is dog friendly as well. So I thought it would a great idea to head over after St. Kilda Farmers.

We took the table next to a dog bowl outside the courtyard. It was quite a lovely day to it outside and soak in some early autumn sun. But with Tekkie in a snappy mood, it proved to be a bad idea. He was snapping at almost everyone that walked past. He was especially bad with the girl that was serving us. Initially, we thought it might be her striking blue shoes but she took it off and he still went for her. Poor chick! I think she was quite upset about it. And I was embarrassed.

It has been awhile since we have tried anything new places in Footscray. We always end up in the same Pho restuarants or just grabbing some roast duck takeaway from Golden Harvest. There has been a couple of new faces but for some reason we stayed away and preferred to stick to the oldies but goodies.

We have walked past this restaurant several times and never thought of going in. It was very modern and it seems like what Phil said, is the new generation of restaurants that we popping up in this area. Anyway, after reading Ms Baklover's review and also having a chat with Phil Lees at the Eat Drink Blog conference, a decision was made to visit Sapa Hills, the newish kid on the block to try the Bo La Lot.

I am still catching up on blogging on the places that I have been and eaten. Not every place that I have been will end up here. I am still constantly searching for nice places to have my weekly Friday lunches around South Melbourne. I would never had known about this place if not for Half-eaten's blog post about it.

Garamerica is an Indonesian restaurant tucked away on Dorcas Street, South Melbourne. The furnishings are simple and the service, quick and no bullshit. You walk in, get seated and order your meal. The lunch deal menu is $11 and it includes a drink. Not too shabby!

We were really looking forward to this. Portello Rosso is tucked away off Lonsdale Street and we would never have known if not for getting lost walking around looking for a munch. Unfortunately, we were turned away as they were too full that particular weekday to accommodate us. So why did I pick this over Movida Aqui and other more interesting and high profile places? Because I felt that smaller restaurants like these deserve to share the limelight with the big names.

We were there at 6.30pm and sat around on the big table downstairs with the rest of the guests enjoying a drink before the night started. There was no expectation. I had the freedom to roam the place before service but I chose to agonise over the choice of my first drink. Not long after, we were told to proceed upstairs for the start of the dinner. We shared the table with 6 very delightful diners.

For the month of March 2010 and in support of the official Melbourne Food and Wine Festival , Beer DeLuxe, at Federation Square, will showcase Japanese culture, beers and food as part of the Shinobi Japanese Secret Beer Garden. Just in case you are wondering, Shinobi means Ninja in Japanese. Also in support of L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and promotion of young creative talent, this secret garden is especially designed by Tokyo-born and Melbourne-based graphic designer, Nami Kano and University of Melbourne Master’s of Architecture student, Olivia Fielding.

I was thrilled to receive an invite from Beer Deluxe to the garden and had a taste of some of the Japanese offerings that is served here for a short time only. I had been to Beer Deluxe a couple of times before after work when I used to work in the CBD. They have a big repertoire of beers from around the world and I believe about 8 - 10 different beers on tap. And I was totally surprised how the outdoor area facing Flinders Street has been transformed. It is such a pity that this set up will be taken down early April as it's a great outdoor area for beer lovers.
