Hardware Societe, Melbourne CBD

I miss working in the Melbourne CBD! I am missing out on all these lovely food. I know that many bloggers have been and written about it but I had to do it. It is too good not to diary it. Hardware Societe is a little jewel in the CBD that shines brightly in the midst of other gems. I absolutely love the French style decor and taken a few happy snaps of it.

KoKo Black – A Nuffnang Chocolate Meetup

Hung Vuong, Footscray

I cannot believe that I have blogged about Hung Vuong in Footscray. With so many choices along Hopkins Street, this has been our preference lately. Maybe because it has heating in winter and air-condition in summer unless many of the older establishments. And also maybe because it has nice white light and better for taking photos!

I made my usual order of beef special combination. It is basically pho served with beef slices, beef sausage that is heavily laced with black pepper, tendons and thinly sliced tripes. The broth is quite heavily scented and flavoured with clove. MSG? Of course! But still a nice broth. The portions here are quite generous. As usual, I love topping it with bean sprouts, Vietnamese basil, a good squeeze of lemon with slices of fresh chill, chilli sauce, hoisin sauce and more chilli oil. Stir, combine and slurp! Pho is the best in winter! Comforting and somehow doesn’t make me feel too heavy after

Zappa, South Melbourne

Thursday is gnocchi day at Zappa. This little cafe is family owned and have been around for ages. It is a South Melbourne institution. Michael is usually there to greet everyone. “Hi Bella! How are you today?” And I love how this place is decked out. So many memoirs and nic nacs stuck on walls from the past to the present. Photos of family, greeting cards, little notes… all of sentimental value and showcases the history of this little café.

Delicious Vietnam #4 – Melbourne Banh Mi Showdown

What is Banh Mi? To many, it is known as Vietnamese roll or Vietnamese baguette. The ones that we get in Melbourne are usually filled with different types of pork slices, pâté spread and a nice dose of pickled salad, fresh coriander and chillies. Over in Vietnam , there is no luxury of meat and it is the bread roll that is the star. I like mine crunchy and flaky. I am prepared to have bread crusts all over me when eating banh mi. That is the first good sign of a good banh mi. And then it is the salad. It has to be fresh with a nice crunch.

Kappaya, Abbotsford Convent

Kappaya is all about simple organic Japanese soul food. It is quietly tucked away in the convent and just next to Lentils as Anything. The menu is small and simple. The shoebox interior is narrow and dimly lighted. It will probably fit 12 people snugly. The outside will be a much nicer place to be in summer.

Il Fornaio, St. Kilda

I had a short stint at Lau’s kitchen when I just got out of uni and needed extra cash and saving up for a house. II Fornio is just located next to Lau’s but I’ve never had any interest in trying it out. And of course it didn’t help that I worked in the evenings and it’s closed by the time I got in. But even with the lunch shift that I had, it didn’t seem appealing at that time. Or maybe I was just a poor graduate that was trying to save up money for a house so anything that looks fanciful would have been to expensive for me

Move forward to 2010, hangover and dehydrated from a night’s out of fun, Billy, Mister and I made the effort to finally pay this a visit. Our visit was definitely motivated by the fact that this place has been recently acquired by St. Ali and Philippa Sibley is rocking their ovens.

Qeleven, South Melbourne

Qeleven was not too crowded on a Thurday afternoon when I visited for a nice lunch by myself. You may ask why I eat alone during lunch breaks. I don’t do this all the time but I do like the quiet time. I could read a book, look at tweets and have lunch. Do not judge me! And no people do not stare at me funny.

Bakers Delight – Olive sourdough bread

There has been a surge in sourdough lovers in recent months. Many that I know have made their very own starter dough. I have jumped onto the bandwagon by buying sourdough instead of my usual loaf of multi-grain bread. So when Bakers Delight contacted me and asked if I wanted to try their new and soon to be released sour dough bread, I said YES YES and YES please.

Bokchoy Tang, Federation Square

I never thought highly of any restaurants in Federation Square except for Taxi dining. They are all a little more pricey, catered for the tourists and food is usually underwhelming. That is my personal opinion of course. But since Mister wanted to try the yumcha at Bokchoy Tang, I did not resist. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and we deserve to relax and have lunch in a nice place.

The Provincial Hotel, Fitzroy

I made a really silly mistake on the way to dinner on Friday. And it costed us a 12hr slow roast lamb. Mister and I both arrived on time for dinner. The place looked particular empty for a Friday night and especially if there was a Family Roast Dinner promotion for the month. We ordered our drinks and looked around the room. No one was having roast? The waitress was also dumbfounded that we mentioned that we pre-ordered our lamb roast. There was no promotion and nor roast!

Chocolate indulgence at The Langham, Melbourne

I jumped onto the chance for a Nuffnang fashion and food bloggers meet up at the Langham for a chocolate breakfast! It was quite early on a Saturday morning but I jumped out of bed even before my alarm went off. Now that is commitment to chocolate.

Langham is located in Southbank and just a hop and skip across the Yarra River from Flinders Street station. It was a rather cold and foggy winter morning and I am thankful that there is a hint of blue skies when I took this photo.

Station Hotel, Footscray

It has been claimed that Footscray is fortunate to have Station Hotel as a local. We have been there on several occassions and it is a nice casual pub that serves good food, beers and even has a decent wine list. The pub is spilt into 3 areas. The front area where it houses the pool table and some high and low tables. The proper dining room area is at the back where usually customers with booking are served. And there is a lovely small courtyard area for those that choose to sit outdoors.
