MissChu Tuckshop, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie April 23, 2011

MissChu tuckshop is the new super hyped eatery in the city. It serves popular Vietnamese food like Pho and rice paper rolls. It seems that at one point, twerps were going a little gaga over it. Since I had the forced luxury of time before leaving for holiday, I decided to head down and check it out. Anh (@anhsfoodblog) was my lunch buddy and it was really good to catch up with her since we last met for mooncake making session last year.

Thai Culinary, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie April 12, 2011

Words spread fast. Recently, I did write about my disappointment with Coconut House. I received an email from the owner explaining how she had been ill and have employed a manager that had totally messed up the place. She further explained that she will be fixing the staffing issues and hope to bring the place back to it’s old glory. So let’s wait and see if she execute those promises.

The downhill of Coconut House

by jeroxie April 3, 2011

Mister and I thought it was a good idea to head back to Coconut House ( read here and here) for a visit. It has been awhile and I did have a craving for a nice wonton noodle which I had the last time and raved about it. But I guess from the title of this post, you know that this isn’t going to be a pretty post. I am not as critical about my food as many. Even if it is ordinary, I am quite happy to eat it and hate wasting food. So what happen that made me feel my plate unfinished and totally disgusted by the whole experience?

Huxtable, Collingwood

by jeroxie March 30, 2011

This particular catch up with a friend is long time coming. We have been planning this for ages but life always get into the way and now she is leaving Melbourne soon for a new adventure. Sometimes when the travel bug bites you, it is time to leave all the familarity and comfort behind and venture into unknowns. Moving countries is a big deal. When I came over from Singapore to pursue my education here, it did not occur to me or my parents that I would stay on. I was young when I landed in Melbourne with 2 suitcases and 1 computer. It was scary but exciting at the same time. Learning about the place, the culture and meeting new people. Everything was exciting and new.

Behind the bar at Steer – Cucumber and apple Martini

by jeroxie March 27, 2011

Not too long ago… actually awhile ago, a group of food bloggers were invited to Steer for dinner (I need to write about it at some point – so slack). During dinner, we were asked if any of us will be interested to go behind the scenes at Steer to learn how a restaurant is run. Basically to find out the manic and the hardwork in running a restaurant. I raised my hand…. of course and some people thought that I was crazy. Maybe I am. I shall soon find out, right?

Entre Tapas y Vino, St. Kilda

by jeroxie March 15, 2011

Deal of the day type business are popping up everywhere the moment. As a consumer, I am not complaining. I get a good deal for stuff that I need anyway. Just don’t go overboard and start collecting these deals that you never use or just because it is a good deal. You will find yourself overspending and not saving money at all. And also you need to make sure that you make that booking as soon as possible. The dates fill up very quickly and you might just miss out on getting a date you want before the expiry date.

Appetizer, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie March 8, 2011

A bunch of us first discovered Appetizer early last year. This place is totally Asian and I know I know, I should have shared this knowledge ages ago but one part of me like to keep it “Asian”. When I enter this Thai bar & restaurant, I get transported back to South-east Asia. It is after all located next to City Gate Apartments. This block of apartments are mostly filled by Asian students and this place does cater to them with its very affordable prices and cheap drop. It’s dining area is mostly open space and so attracts many smokers and drinkers. It is not exactly rowdy but it is very Asian. And that is why a part of me want to keep it the way it is. I come here and I feel comfortable or rather familiar. And now this is out on Gourmet Traveller and also on twitter… this secret is no more so I shall share why I love this place much more than most hatted restaurants in Melbourne.

An Oeuf Roe Degustation Dinner at Provenance Food and Wine, Collingwood

by jeroxie March 4, 2011

Provenance on Smith Street has been on my radar for awhile now. I have been reading about its “Seasonal Pleasures” degustation from other food blogs and also its infamous craft beer and cider Sundays. So when an invitation came for me and my plus one to experience “An Oeuf Roe Degustation Dinner”, I said “Hell yeah!”

Byblos, Docklands

by jeroxie February 25, 2011

Docklands has a bad rep for being cold, harsh and super windy. Unless I am on my bike and riding through it on the weekend, I will try and stay away at all costs. For the Melbournians, I am sure many share my sentiments. How do the cafe/restaurant/bar businesses survive in Docklands? So I was very excited when I got an invite to Byblos to try out their menu. Byblos is a lebanese tapas restaurant. This is the second Byblos restaurant in Australia.

Royal Mail Hotel – Best meal in 2010

by jeroxie February 7, 2011

Finally, I sat down and finish this post. It did take me a couple of months as I left it aside but as I looked at the photos, bits of memories came flooding back. I wanted to run back to Royal Mail Hotel and be courted again.

Chillipadi mamak kopitiam, Flemington

by jeroxie February 4, 2011

Flemington is fast becoming the Asian food mecca in Melbourne. We have 2 high profile Malaysian Chinese eateries that is in heavy competition to each other – Laksa King and Chef Legenda. A Chinese yong tao fu shop and another Chinese dumplings and BBQ place is opening up soon. And now, Chillipadi Mamak Kopitiam has joined in fun. And apparently a sichuan place is opening up near Coles on Racecourse road! All the food I like is just round the corner from us. Hooray!

A bling bling Yum cha at Shanghai Dynasty, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie January 27, 2011

To be honest, yum cha in the city is pretty crap. I do like Sharkfins Inn but really don’t like being elbow to elbow to the next table. The level of MSG is so high that I have my tongue hanging out every time I leave the place. Yum cha these days are usually out in the suburbs like Plume in High point and now new favourite, Gold Leaf in Sunshine. I have not been writing about yum cha places because there is so many times I can explain how good or bad a har gao (prawn dumpling) is. I guess I should make it a new challenge this year. Report more on yum cha places around Melbourne. And will think of a new format to do that. Pop me an email or leave a comment if you have any suggestions.

Hutong, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie January 21, 2011

Hutong in Melbourne is famous for its juicy xiao long bao or also known as XLB. It is located in Market Lane and just opposite the exquisite Flower Drum which I must make an effort to go back this year. It seems that both food and interior is under renovation. It has such a long time since I last visited Flower Drum. I still think that it makes the best Peking duck in town. Even thinking about it is making me drool.

Kedai Satay, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie December 16, 2010

It seems that I am pouncing on almost every new Asian eatery around Melbourne and I have yet to find out that is amazing. And most likely I will never find one in Melbourne. Since a few food bloggers have been to Kedai and rated it, I thought it might be ok to have a little more expectations. Kedai Satay is an Indonesian restaurant on Kings Street. Great for the office people as it served relatively cheap lunch meals with great deals. And apparently it has a functional area upstairs available. And did I mention cheap bottle beers (Corona & Pure Blonde) for $5! And not forgetting that they stock Tiger & Bintang as well. But what about the food? Any good?

Mamasita, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie December 7, 2010

The first time I tried Mamasita was when it first opened its doors. I was the few on the table that did not like it. Most of the dishes were lacking in flavour and the lamb that Suzzane has was dry. I even wrote a comment on Urbanspoon about it. It was a very busy night and it was still new. So I gave it a benefit of a doubt and gave it a second chance. I caught up with Kimberley, Jina and Cheryl for a girls night out. It has been awhile since we last got together.
