One of Mister’s close friend was in town just this Easter passing. He has been away for a year travelling around the world and currently settled in London and working. It has been tough for him and I can imagine the change in lifestyle has also changed him. I was always this weird anticipation before catching up with friends that I have not met for awhile. Will we still be able to just pick up from where we left off? Do you ever have this feeling?
Anyway, the day we caught up was the day that Mister and I spent the day with #ramenhunters. After a day of eating, it was unthinkable that we could consume anymore food. We settled for Korean BBQ. I could at least choose to nibble on pieces of meat and not feel self conscious.
I am still catching up on blogging on the places that I have been and eaten. Not every place that I have been will end up here. I am still constantly searching for nice places to have my weekly Friday lunches around South Melbourne. I would never had known about this place if not for Half-eaten’s blog post about it.
Garamerica is an Indonesian restaurant tucked away on Dorcas Street, South Melbourne. The furnishings are simple and the service, quick and no bullshit. You walk in, get seated and order your meal. The lunch deal menu is $11 and it includes a drink. Not too shabby!
We were really looking forward to this. Portello Rosso is tucked away off Lonsdale Street and we would never have known if not for getting lost walking around looking for a munch. Unfortunately, we were turned away as they were too full that particular weekday to accommodate us. So why did I pick this over Movida Aqui and other more interesting and high profile places? Because I felt that smaller restaurants like these deserve to share the limelight with the big names.
We were there at 6.30pm and sat around on the big table downstairs with the rest of the guests enjoying a drink before the night started. There was no expectation. I had the freedom to roam the place before service but I chose to agonise over the choice of my first drink. Not long after, we were told to proceed upstairs for the start of the dinner. We shared the table with 6 very delightful diners.
I need to take a break from all the feasting after this hectic 2 weeks of eating and drinking. It all started a couple of weeks before Chinese New Year where we spent my weekends making pineapple tarts, cashew nut cookies and kuih bangkit. And I made heart-shaped ones because the first day of Chinese New Year falls on Valentine’s Day as well. So more love around for everyone!
A small group of us decided to celebrate both eve and first day of Chinese New Year together. And our place were opened to them. On the eve, we opted to have steamboat. As usual, I volunteered to shop and make 2 types of broth for the evening. The night before was the 30th birthday of 2 friends. Mister and I were shopping totally hungover. We were not a pretty sight. But the party must go on and so we dragged our sorry self to the markets.
