I was never a fan of the pressure cooker until I watched the contestants use it and how quickly a piece of tough meat turns into melting morsel of delight. I have heard good and bad things about the pressure cooker. And I was still not convinced about the final flavour of the dish.

Basic pasta recipe

100g strong flour to 1 egg.

It is that easy. And do you know why some pasta are so super yellow? Some people like me will add an additional egg yolk to 200g of flour or use only egg yolks. I have used 200g of flour to 4 egg yolks and it works perfectly. You will also need loads of additional flour to dust the dough.

Maple-Walnut Pear Cake

Maple syrup made and bought in Canada is the real deal. Maple syrup is not honey! It is a syrup made from tapping and extracting the sap and from sugar, red and black maple trees. In our last trip to Toronto, we carried home this amber liquid of goodness. Instead of just drinking it by the spoonfuls and generous drizzle on pancakes, maple syrup can used in baked goods.

Chin Chin Melbourne, Melbourne CBD

This is my second visit to Chin Chin. It is the Chin Chin on 125 Flinders Lane that everyone is talking about. It is the new IN place to be seen eating and sipping cocktails in Melbourne CBD. The brains behind Chin Chin is Chris Lucas and the man in the kitchen is Andrew Gimber which will be joined by Ben Cooper from St. Ali very soon.

International Incident Terrine Party – Sushi terrine

I have eaten my fair share of terrines but have only made one terrine in my entire cooking life. To be honest, I am not particularly a big pan of terrine. They are pretty look at and some are delicious but I sometimes think that it lacks punchy flavours or just way too rich for my liking. I guess I never had the perfect terrine.

Cooking the Books – Momofuku Brick Chicken

In March 2010, a group of us came together and cooked a #momofukurage dinner. Rage because we felt “cheated” that all tickets to the David Chang’s dinner during the Melbourne Food and Wine festival (2010) was sold out within minutes of release. Are you serious? Are you freaking serious? The twitterverse was in rage and so we decided to have a Momofuku pot luck dinner party where we each picked a dish from the cookbook and cook it.

Goat Shanks Massaman Curry

In a recent Australian Masterchef elimination challenge, Kumar and Andrew had to go head to head to fix a terrible version of massaman curry. Andrew left the Masterchef Kitchen that evening on the basis that it tasted less of a massaman curry as it has no peanuts and another reason that I cannot remember. I looked up the Masterchef website for the recipe and decided to give it a shot. I tweaked the spices a little and added the all important peanuts to the recipe.

Autumn and Winter means that fruits like oranges, lemons and apples are in season. Mister and myself are a lover of fruits. I feel that is an Asian thing to have fruits after dinner. In summer, fruits after dinner are usually watermelons, mangoes, papaya, various stone fruits and the occasional pineapple and strawberries. Mid autumn and very much into winter, I love having oranges, mandarins, apples and pears. This year it is no different. Seasonal apples are starting to pop up in farmers market and also supermarkets around Australia.

Cookbook Challenge (Egg) – Cauliflower with egg, cheese and bacon

The motivation of this challenge is to go back to old cookbooks that I have long forgotten and has been collecting dust over the years. There are some which I am constantly using and some are just totally neglected. For this challenge, I searched through my neglected pile of cookbooks. I was not looking for desserts but something savoury. And I know for this theme we needed to showcase the egg but for some reason, I don’t think this recipe that I selected did and it is more cheese than egg. But hey, you love cheese as much as I do right?

Cake pops seem to be increasing in popularity. But many people seem to be afraid to try making them at home. I did procrastinate for a little while which is why I decided to make this as a theme for April. I needed some sort of motivation. I did a fair bit of research and to be honest, I was trying to figure out the easiest but yummiest way to make these cake pops. Also I picked tips from the recent article on Herald Sunday Food that showcased cake pops as the new and upcoming pop stars.

Cheesy fluffy pancakes with bacon

There is always an excuse for having an addiction of naughty foods. Bad hair day, bad week, chipped nail and the list just goes on. But in all fairness, I did have a really rough week. I deserve pancakes. And not just any plain pancakes. Pancakes that will make me shout “Life is good. Life is fair!”And also, there is the reason that I owe Mister some pancakes. He had been hanging out for it the whole week but despite my circumstances, everything just seem to happen together and to be honest, I had no mood to cook.

The downhill of Coconut House

Mister and I thought it was a good idea to head back to Coconut House ( read here and here) for a visit. It has been awhile and I did have a craving for a nice wonton noodle which I had the last time and raved about it. But I guess from the title of this post, you know that this isn’t going to be a pretty post. I am not as critical about my food as many. Even if it is ordinary, I am quite happy to eat it and hate wasting food. So what happen that made me feel my plate unfinished and totally disgusted by the whole experience?

Meal to share (South Africa) – Mini Bunny Chow

In Durban, large Indian origins that arrived from the 1860′s as labourers for the sugarcane plantations. The cuisine in Durban is greatly influenced by the Indians. The first and original bunny chow was vegetarian. But now the curry filling can be chicken, mutton or lamb. Loafs of breads are hollowed out and then the curry fills the hole and served.
