What a week! I am glad that it is almost over. It has been a bit of a rough ride with a project launch. I just find it difficult to fall asleep when there are a millions things to do and I’ve this feeling that something may go wrong while I’m in lala land. My eyebags are reaching my chin and I feel 10 years older.

My unwillingness to sleep can also be blamed on the multiple late nights that I stayed awake during the World CUP, Wimbledon and Tour De France. I need to get back into my proper sleeping pattern again. But wait….. the EPL is starting soon!

I guess it was an early Saturday morning and the chick behind the counter was still half asleep. My heart was set on pistachios and it was too late once I got home and realised she has given me salted cashew nuts instead. Bummer! Or is my pronunciation or slang so bad that she could have mistaken pistachios and cashew nuts?

I did a short stint in the kitchen at a Mexican restaurant back in Singapore when I was 16. I remembered a lot of chopping of cabbage and tomatoes. And I remember the countless times that I burnt myself deep frying those tacos shell! And of course, I remembered the sneaky sips of margaritas after work. That is as much as I know of Mexican food.

I had all these lovely ideas in my head but this time, it didn’t work out the way I visualised it. I am a little disappointed with the outcome. But I am sure that the rest of the party people will be producing fantastic taco dishes.

So far it has been smooth sailing. I DO NOT recommend anyone to sign up with Fatcow!

Mister and I had a much more grandeur idea for this week’s Meatless Monday dish but all fell apart when both of us had a little too much fun on Friday night and paid for it on Saturday. There was no luxury of a sleep in as we headed off early Saturday morning to catch up with @cloudcontrol for grocery shopping at St. Kilda’s farmers market.

Saturday was a total write-off. Napping or rather sleeping in the afternoon and then followed by @eatnik’s birthday party. And it was also a night of disappointment when Argentina was defeated by German, 4 goals to nil. It was the one team that I had so much hope to win this worldcup. Dreams and hopes were shattered that night.

World cup fever is definitely in the air. This time in 2006, we were in Germany and loved every minute of it. The passion for the sport is so exhilarating. Everyone talked about football (not soccer). It is FOOTBALL. I remembered the joy and OMG feeling when Socceroos thumped Japan in the first round. And we were in the Munich stadium when we lost to Brazil. And also the moments of that we were in a bar in Italy when we watched Socceroos drew with Croatia 2-2 to go into the next round, facing Italy. And how our dream ended the 2006 world cup dream when we lost to Italy. I love the world cup. I love football. It brings all sorts of people together, just like food. I don't mind the late nights and early mornings. The World Cup only happens once every 4 years. Time to start saving for 2014. We want to be where the action is.

The Chinese has been making and eating noodles since 2000BC. Like rice, it is a part of the staple diet. It is always part of many Chinese festivals like Chinese New Year and also a must have dish on birthdays. I remember that my grandma would make us a bowl of mee sua. We aren’t allowed to ‘cut’ the noodles while eating it as it signifies longevity.

We are spoilt in Melbourne with great food and produce. But there are just some dishes that rarely hit the right spot. One of these dishes is Ban Mian. It is a type of egg noodle that is very popular in both Malaysia and Singapore. Some use anchovies as the base soup and some places have different toppings. I find the broth served here either very bland and the noodles not well made. Or maybe I am just not looking the right places.

Trix (Tasty Trix) and I probably started blogging about a month apart. I think we hit it off blog-wise almost instantly. I love her style of writing - simple and very personable. She totally won me over when she wrote an a series of "12 Days of Feasting: Medieval Meals for Your Holiday Table" over the Christmas festive season last year. It was brilliant and what a great insight of the sort of dedicated and real person she is.
She took us along on her travels to Vienna and Budapest. It was an education of places, foods and goodies that I have never seen or heard before. To top it up, I was over the moon when she tried my chai tow kway recipe and it worked beautifully. It is always nice to know that a recipe worked and someone else out there love it.

They are still buying store bought jam from the supermarket. Old habits are hard to kick and I am to blame for not teaching mum how easy it is to make homemade jam. Having said that, I did grow up with supermarket jam, thinking that it is the best in the world. I was awarded with peanut butter and jam sandwiches when I am good. Now, I make my own jam and can't remember the last time I bought any jams from anyone. Jamming is such an easy and satisfying process.

Do you remember this post - Pineapple Quinoa with Goji Berries and Arugula? This was a guest post written by Divina (Sense & Serendipity). And that was the first time that I took notice of this super grain, Quinoa. It's known as an ancient grain that was once called "the gold of the Incas." I have never cooked this grain before and not having done enough research, I thought it may be very similar to cous cous.

Announcement!

Meatless Day is now Meatless Mondays. This was started in 2003 to encourage better healthy living for ourselves and the planet. There are many reasons to join this movement but it is entirely up to the individual and what the reason/s is or are.

I am sure many Australians are aware who Donna Hay is. I have never really been a big fan of Donna Hay but in her recent 50th Anniversary edition, I could not help myself but to bake the chocolate cake that was on the cover. Of course, mine did not look anywhere like hers. So I said yes when Mardi of Eat.Live.Write.Travel asked me to participate in a Hay Hay it's Donna Day event (HHDD) that was initiated by Chez Us, I had to say yes and hoping to redeem myself.

First of all, I will like to thank Casey of Eating, Garden & Living in Bulgaria for organising an African Day event to learn and experience the African culture through food.

I love Moroccan cuisine. The colours of the food is very bold to match their aromatic spices. As usual, I like to take myself out of the comfort zone and also wanted to make sure of this opportunity to explore other African foods.

I cannot remember the last time I made filo samosa. It must have been when both of us did our short 6 month vegetarian stint many years ago. They are really simple to make and taste so good. I guess when there is heaps of butter and Indian spices involved, anything would taste delicious

We are on a Vietnamese theme this week. Along with the smoked duck rice paper roll that was made over the weekend, I made a vegetarian rice paper roll as well. And as promised earlier in the week, there is the recipe. And I had enough to pack our lunch boxes as well!
