Chillipadi mamak kopitiam, Flemington

by jeroxie February 4, 2011

Flemington is fast becoming the Asian food mecca in Melbourne. We have 2 high profile Malaysian Chinese eateries that is in heavy competition to each other – Laksa King and Chef Legenda. A Chinese yong tao fu shop and another Chinese dumplings and BBQ place is opening up soon. And now, Chillipadi Mamak Kopitiam has joined in fun. And apparently a sichuan place is opening up near Coles on Racecourse road! All the food I like is just round the corner from us. Hooray!

A bling bling Yum cha at Shanghai Dynasty, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie January 27, 2011

To be honest, yum cha in the city is pretty crap. I do like Sharkfins Inn but really don’t like being elbow to elbow to the next table. The level of MSG is so high that I have my tongue hanging out every time I leave the place. Yum cha these days are usually out in the suburbs like Plume in High point and now new favourite, Gold Leaf in Sunshine. I have not been writing about yum cha places because there is so many times I can explain how good or bad a har gao (prawn dumpling) is. I guess I should make it a new challenge this year. Report more on yum cha places around Melbourne. And will think of a new format to do that. Pop me an email or leave a comment if you have any suggestions.

Hutong, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie January 21, 2011

Hutong in Melbourne is famous for its juicy xiao long bao or also known as XLB. It is located in Market Lane and just opposite the exquisite Flower Drum which I must make an effort to go back this year. It seems that both food and interior is under renovation. It has such a long time since I last visited Flower Drum. I still think that it makes the best Peking duck in town. Even thinking about it is making me drool.

+39 Pizzeria, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie January 18, 2011

+39 Pizzeria was voted “The Pizzeria of the year 2010″ by The Age (Epicure). After being wowed by D.O.C, this place needs to top it. +39 is located in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. To avoid disappointment of not getting a table or a long wait, I will suggesting booking in advance. The dining area is quite tight and many patrons were elbow to elbow. The tables are so close to one another that I cannot help but to eves drop on conversations. The smell of the pizza coming out of the oven was intoxicating and definitely stirred up the hunger juices!

Naked for Satan, Fitzroy

by jeroxie January 6, 2011

This is the first day of my Christmas and New Year holiday. Finally, I had time to head out for lunch with my mum that was visiting at that time. After finishing up some work email and pottering around the house a little, I decided to take my mum to Naked for Satan for lunch before heading to Slow Food at Abbotsford Convent to pick up pre-ordered holiday season party supplies of meats.

D.O.C. Pizza and Mozzarella Bar, Carlton

by jeroxie December 27, 2010

I must be last the food blogger to visit D.O.C. It has been on my list for the longest time ever but then I am not a big pizza fan so this place has been on the back burner for the longest time ever. D.O.C is a pizza and mozzarella joint in Carlton. It is almost always busy and most people are happy to queue. I am not a big fan but since it is my mum wanted to have some Italian, I thought why not take the opportunity to check out this place. Finally.

Kedai Satay, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie December 16, 2010

It seems that I am pouncing on almost every new Asian eatery around Melbourne and I have yet to find out that is amazing. And most likely I will never find one in Melbourne. Since a few food bloggers have been to Kedai and rated it, I thought it might be ok to have a little more expectations. Kedai Satay is an Indonesian restaurant on Kings Street. Great for the office people as it served relatively cheap lunch meals with great deals. And apparently it has a functional area upstairs available. And did I mention cheap bottle beers (Corona & Pure Blonde) for $5! And not forgetting that they stock Tiger & Bintang as well. But what about the food? Any good?

Los Latinos, Maidstone

by jeroxie December 3, 2010

Mum is now in town and she is going to be hanging around for a month. I have to thank her for my obsession with eating. My mum is a poor cook but she loves to eat. I remember when I was younger, there are always food outings. Breakfast first and then after a couple of hours, lunch and then tea and it just goes on and on. She always encourage me to try different food and cuisine. She prefers the more ‘exotic’ type food whereas my dad loves his hawker food. I had the best of both worlds.

Dong Ba, Footscray

by jeroxie November 28, 2010

With Billy’s recommendation, Mister ordered the bun bo hue. It is also known as spicy beef. I think Billy had a kick from our bad pronunciation. It was seriously good. I could taste the lemongrass and not much chilli. Apparently it is not suppose to be chilli hot? There is so much flavour in the broth. I just wanted to drink the whole bowl and not return it to Mister. And look at the blood cube! Delicious. I must order this the next time.

Stove Kitchen, South Melbourne

by jeroxie November 12, 2010

I am very excited that South Melbourne has landed itself a new cafe/restaurant on Clarendon Street. More options to the otherwise mundane lunch selections. Stove Ktichen is brought to my attention by a fellow reader that works in the same area! Hooray! She has actually given me another lead where I will head to in the next couple of weeks.

Melbourne Food Bloggers Dinner – A sneak peak

by jeroxie November 8, 2010

This dinner took about 3 months from the beginning of discussion till today. It was 3 months of back and forth. First, asking the guys from Miss Jackson if they wanted to run this idea with me. And then getting fellow food bloggers on board. We had friends that helped us with the poster design and also a couple of very willing taste testers.

Friends of Mine, Richmond

by jeroxie October 31, 2010

I know I should be cooking more at home. Need to save money for our upcoming holiday in New Zealand. But I succumbed to laziness and also the yearning for good coffee and decent, wholesome breakfast. As I was going through my morning tweets, @FriendsofMine_ kept appearing in my tweet stream.. hmmm.. Richmond….. traffic and difficult parking. Yes or No? It was an early Sunday morning so why not. I did literally drag Mister out from bed early on Sunday morning. All in the name of good food!

Elevenses now reopened, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie October 22, 2010

I like both Shanny & Tom. I think they are super awesome. Remember this post that I wrote last year? After a big hail and storm that happened earlier this year, their lovely heart and soul cafe was literally, destroyed. They were heart broken and so was I. I missed heading down on a Saturday morning to pick up a coffee before heading to the farmers market. I missed the little short chats with Shanny about beef rendang and kaya toast. But now I am happy again. They have finally reopened a very quaint looking Elevenses in Melbourne CBD. A sigh of relieve and now they can live their dream again

Nonya Buffet at Chilli Padi, Melbourne Central

by jeroxie October 20, 2010

What does Nonya mean? Or Peranakan? Not to go into the history of it, Peranakan originated from Chinese that settled in Southeast Asia in the 19th century and married to local Malays. I recall how my grandma will tie her hair up in a certain bun, wear the beautiful kebaya and wear loads of gold during festive season. Even my uncle loves to wear the sarong until now! I

Melbourne Food Bloggers’ Dinner – Are you coming?

by jeroxie October 18, 2010

Am I crazy? After reading about the food bloggers dinner in Sydney, I wanted to do this as well. Freaking scary? Hell yes but what the hell right? If we dine out and act as if we know about food, then I thought why not try cooking for the public and allow them to tear us to pieces. Taking in good criticism is the best way to learn. It has been a huge learning curve so far. Sometimes fun and sometimes, a little frustrating.
