Emerald Hill Café, South Melbourne

by jeroxie September 7, 2010

Another post in my draft which I just was not sure to post or not to post. Winter has passed and maybe I was too harsh in my initial reaction of this place. I have not been back and have no intention to even though colleagues and friends were saying that I should. I guess what I ate left a really bad taste in my mouth.

The photos below were taken on one lovely Friday winter afternoon. Blue skies and rolling fluffy clouds. Sunny winter days are fantastic in Melbourne. It was a great day to walk around the area. I took some happy snaps just as a reminder of how Melbourne looks like on a nice winter afternoon.

I made Rojak

by jeroxie September 5, 2010

What the hell is rojak? Rojak is a savory fruit and vegetable salad. You may think that it sounds gross but it isn’t. I love a good rojak is one of the hawker sensation that I must have when I head back to Asia. It is very well known in both Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Basically, rojak means “mixed up”. There are many different types of rojak. There are rojak versions that are just fruits as seen in the street carts of Jakarta. In Singapore and Malaysia, there is a verion of Indian rojak. Indian rojak has added eggs, deep fried prawns and uses a different sauce. It is definitely much heavier. The rojak that I crave has loads of fruits and vegetables and smoothered with a sweet, salty and spicy sauce topped with roasted, crushed peanuts.

Why did I decide to make rojak? The nice people of King of Fruit sent me a box of pineapples and other goodies. The first thing that came to mind was rojak. Good rojak is hard to find in Melbourne and some of the interpretations that I find here aren’t too appealing to my tastebuds. It is either too sweet or too sour or just boring. The most recent one that I tried was at Old Town Kopitiam Mamak and I hated it. There is way too much sauce and I can’t taste anything else… maybe just the sour green apple. Sorry but yuck!

Hardware Societe, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie September 5, 2010

I miss working in the Melbourne CBD! I am missing out on all these lovely food. I know that many bloggers have been and written about it but I had to do it. It is too good not to diary it. Hardware Societe is a little jewel in the CBD that shines brightly in the midst of other gems. I absolutely love the French style decor and taken a few happy snaps of it.

Opening Night at Taste of Melbourne 2010

by jeroxie September 3, 2010

Taste of Melbourne is in its 3rd year running and this is my very first Taste. I was so bummed last year when I missed it because I too ill to attend. Not even food could entice me to move from my doona. However, this year, I had the opportunity to spend my first Taste of Melbourne on Opening night with 7 other bloggers organised by HotHouse Media & Events. I was so excited that I could not sit still and was half functional at work.

I was on time and surprised to see fire trucks outside the Royal Carlton Exhibition Building. It was unclear what had caused the fire so our early start of 5pm was delayed till 5.30pm. We were happy to finally able to get in and get started!

Guest recipe – Olive Oil Chocolate Mousse

by jeroxie September 2, 2010

Olive Oil Chocolate Mousse by Shellie (Iron Chef Shellie)

The silky smooth texture and sweet notes of the Manzanillo make this eggless chocolate mousse a
delight to eat. The olive oil taste isn’t overpowering or strong, it is mellow and just brings the
chocolate and cream to life. ”

I had the sweet priviledge of attending Sugadeaux Cupcake Tasting at Amsterdam Cafe last year. Before I move on to what this year’s tasting had to offer, allow me to tease you with what I tried last year and some of the flavours that I believe is still in stock and why you should eat them! My favourite was and is the toffee apple and it’s still available!

KoKo Black – A Nuffnang Chocolate Meetup

by jeroxie August 24, 2010

I love meetups and meeting new people. So when it came for volunteers to help organise a Nuffnang meetup, I was probably the first to raise my hand. And it was lovely to be able to co-host this chocolate event with lovely, super adorable and talented, Violet of Violet Le Beaux.

Parisian Patisserie Boulangerie, North Essendon

by jeroxie August 17, 2010

Some of you may be aware that I am trying to achieve some decent baking skills before year end and to be able to bake a reasonably batch of macarons. I bought my first proper baking book ever. A very popular recommendation from twittverse. It shall be reviewed in the coming weeks. Please stay with me as I thread onto the world of flour, butter, sugar and eggs.

An invitation to a proper patisserie to taste and ….. this post is not about me but a very talented patissier, Neil Mckenzie (trained in Le Cordon Bleu) and the newly opened shop, Parisan Patisserie that is set up by him and his wife, Majella. This Parisan Patisserie Boulangerie is located in North Essendon and it’s just a 5 mins drive from home! Perfect!

Zappa, South Melbourne

by jeroxie August 8, 2010

Thursday is gnocchi day at Zappa. This little cafe is family owned and have been around for ages. It is a South Melbourne institution. Michael is usually there to greet everyone. “Hi Bella! How are you today?” And I love how this place is decked out. So many memoirs and nic nacs stuck on walls from the past to the present. Photos of family, greeting cards, little notes… all of sentimental value and showcases the history of this little café.

Christmas in July at The Langham Melbourne

by jeroxie August 2, 2010

I was literally running to The Langham. The tram stopped infront of Crown Casino and I ran all the way. By the time I arrived, I was puffed and ready to get into the chocolate and pudding classs. We were served beautiful canapes (which unfortunately I had no photos) with champagne. And before we headed off to our ‘Masterclass”, we were all given a set of apron and chef hat. We all had a chuckle and so wanted to have a group photo after. Alas, we forgot… What a waste! We all looked hilarious. So I compiled the photos and hopefully it gives you an idea of our happy silliness!

Kappaya, Abbotsford Convent

by jeroxie July 28, 2010

Kappaya is all about simple organic Japanese soul food. It is quietly tucked away in the convent and just next to Lentils as Anything. The menu is small and simple. The shoebox interior is narrow and dimly lighted. It will probably fit 12 people snugly. The outside will be a much nicer place to be in summer.
