Malaysia Kitchen Blogger Summit – Lim’s Nyonya Hut

by jeroxie August 21, 2011

In the third week of the Malaysia Kitchen Blogger Summit, I will like to introduce a cuisine much closer to my heart – The Peranakan, the Straits Chinese or also known as Nyonya or Nonya. There are 3 countries in the world where most Peranakan lives – Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. The Peranakan is a marriage of Chinese settlers to local Malays. The Peranakan itself is vaguely divided into two main groups. The ones in the East coast (Kelantan and Terengganu) which are more Malay influenced and the ones in the West coast like Malacca which are more Chinese influence. The communities in both Penang and Singapore were established later. There is so much history behind this very special, vibrant and fusion culture and I am so proud to be part of it.

Malaysia Kitchen Blogger Summit – Laksa Me and a bowl of laksa

by jeroxie August 14, 2011

My first encounter with Mr Allen Woo, owner and chef of Laksa Me, was at the recent Good Food and Wine Show in Melbourne. Malaysian Kitchen had a pretty big booth at the show and Mr Allen was one of the ambassador for Malaysia Kitchen and presenter at one of the sessions. I walked in on his presentation about Laksa and loved it. It had a lot of energy and I thought he held a wealth of knowledge and passion about Malaysian cuisine, the ingredients and her history.

Guest Post – Malaysian Hawker Style Cooking with Chef Wanitha

by jeroxie May 22, 2011

I have a soft spot for anything Malaysian or Nyonya and that is due to my background. Even though I am born and raised in Singapore, I still have family back in Malaysia and grandparents were originally from Penang. And I have been a keen student of the Malaysian cuisine and owning many local Singapore and Malaysian cooking books.

Chillipadi mamak kopitiam, Flemington

by jeroxie February 4, 2011

Flemington is fast becoming the Asian food mecca in Melbourne. We have 2 high profile Malaysian Chinese eateries that is in heavy competition to each other – Laksa King and Chef Legenda. A Chinese yong tao fu shop and another Chinese dumplings and BBQ place is opening up soon. And now, Chillipadi Mamak Kopitiam has joined in fun. And apparently a sichuan place is opening up near Coles on Racecourse road! All the food I like is just round the corner from us. Hooray!

Nonya Buffet at Chilli Padi, Melbourne Central

by jeroxie October 20, 2010

What does Nonya mean? Or Peranakan? Not to go into the history of it, Peranakan originated from Chinese that settled in Southeast Asia in the 19th century and married to local Malays. I recall how my grandma will tie her hair up in a certain bun, wear the beautiful kebaya and wear loads of gold during festive season. Even my uncle loves to wear the sarong until now! I

Vy Vy, Flemington

by jeroxie September 28, 2010

It takes a lot to stop me in my tracks on my way home. Especially, when I’m hungry and heading for dinner after a long day. But the music was pumping and there was a crowd watching some kind of parade or show? Curiosity got better of me. Legs! Legs walking up and down to the beat of the music. Voodoo Hosiery must have set this up part of Spring Fashion Week. Only legs were shown. I wonder how the girls look like?!? Is this bad?

Chef Lagenda, Flemington

by jeroxie September 21, 2010

Next to the newly re-opened Laksa King is another Malaysian restaurant, Cafe Lagenda. It has been rumoured that this place is opened by a previous chef or partner. Mister is adamant that the chef in this kitchen is the previous chef from Laksa King. Does anyone know anything? Gossip?

Coconut House after its renovation

by jeroxie April 27, 2010

We have not visited Coconut House after its recent renovation. We walked past it several times as we head to Rose Garden at times for lunch. Coconut House is hardly empty. It is always buzzing and I think even more so after its renovation. What caught my eye that fateful Saturday was the poster of a bowl of wonton noodles. I must have it. A little queue won’t kill right?

Both of us have a soft spot for cendol and was please to find it on the new menu. The Coconut House Cendol Special was served with soya bean and gula malacca (palm sugar). It was not as we expected. The cendol was not well made and just did not work with the soya bean. It is probably more healthy than having coconut milk instead but soya bean lacked the flavour.

My delicious Chinese New Year 2010

by jeroxie March 4, 2010

I need to take a break from all the feasting after this hectic 2 weeks of eating and drinking. It all started a couple of weeks before Chinese New Year where we spent my weekends making pineapple tarts, cashew nut cookies and kuih bangkit. And I made heart-shaped ones because the first day of Chinese New Year falls on Valentine’s Day as well. So more love around for everyone!
A small group of us decided to celebrate both eve and first day of Chinese New Year together. And our place were opened to them. On the eve, we opted to have steamboat. As usual, I volunteered to shop and make 2 types of broth for the evening. The night before was the 30th birthday of 2 friends. Mister and I were shopping totally hungover. We were not a pretty sight. But the party must go on and so we dragged our sorry self to the markets.

MY Restaurant

by jeroxie November 5, 2009

It is beyond a doubt that I love my Mamak. When I found and read about MY from @stickifingers, I knew I had to make a trip down. It did take me awhile as I was distracted with food within my proximity but Mister and I finally drove ourselves across the river last Friday. Surprise surprise. Friday night and no binge drinking. No getting home early Saturday morning. It was a good break from the usual madness.

Is Laksa King still the King?

by jeroxie November 3, 2009

Laksa King has been around for ages. I used to visit this place when I was at Uni with my fellow Singaporean or Malaysian friends. This was the place to go if we wanted to get our Laksa fix. After more than a decade, the furnishings of this place remains the same. The old laminated wooden tables are still around. There are still queues on most nights. And this place still only accepts cash only!

The battle with 2 coconuts

by jeroxie October 30, 2009

My weekends are always filled with cooking challenges that I set for myself. I have failures and triumphs as many of you would have read about it on my blog. And just last weekend, I decided to crack, grate and squeeze my very first fresh coconut milk. It was a very messy affair but I did receive a lot of help of twittverse. And I will like to thank @tomatom for lending me a coconut grater.

I do recall that Grandma will buy grated coconut from the Indian/Pakistani stores in the wet market. She will then squeeze the life out of them to make curries and other delicious desserts. I found a version of the grater on youtube. It is pretty innovative and I wish I had one of these at home. :)

Bee Koh – A simple sweet Nyonya dessert

by jeroxie September 24, 2009

Flipping through the Nyonya recipe book, I realised that the Nyonyas & Peranakans have very sweet tooth. The most common ingredients used are sugar, glutinous rice, coconut milk and pandan or banana leaves.

This is one of the many dessert recipes that I will try making. It is a simple glutinous rice pudding and I am sure it will satisfy anyone who loves the big sugar hit. You will be able to find the glutinous rice and pandan leaves in almost any Asian grocery shops. Just note that it is hard to find fresh pandan leaves here so they will be stored in the freezer. I made the mistake of not checking when I was in Footscray. Mister drove me all the way to Richmond and then realisation hit me. Duh~~~
