Slow cook red wine lamb with fig and aromatic basmati rice

by jeroxie May 10, 2012

There has been a couple slow cook dishes from me lately. Can’t blame me since the weather has turned and winter is just round the corner. I always love autumn and in Sydney, it is even better. The weather has been beautiful for the last couple of weeks and this week itself has been sitting at around the early 20s with clear blue skies. I just wished that there was more time outdoors than late nights at work.

Chickpeas and smoked cod patties

by jeroxie May 3, 2012

I love making fish patties with potatoes. As part of a competition to win a table for four at Marque, I was sent a mystery box and one of the few items were chickpeas and fresh mint. I shall share the rest of the items in another post. I chose to do Middle Eastern inspired dishes and this is my entree entry. My initial plan was to make a fully spiced up and aromatic chickpeas patty but after a trip to the Sydney fish market, I changed my mind. I love working with anything smoked. It gives a dish a rather down to earth type feel.

Slow cooker beef short ribs

by jeroxie May 1, 2012

If I was still in Melbourne, the scarfs, thick jackets and beanies will be out from storage. I am still really nice and comfy in T-shirts and a light jumper in Sydney. But the weather is gradually starting to turn. I can finally wear jeans out in comfort and wearing thongs out to the shops makes my toes cringe. This means it is time for more slow cooking and comfort food.

Marrickville Pork Roll

by jeroxie April 26, 2012

We have yet to find a nice and decent pho place around our area but have definitely stumbled upon one of the best banh mi in both Sydney and Melbourne. It’s a big call and the decision might be based on our desperation to find decent Vietnamese eateries and meals close by. We first heard [...]

Cooking on the Bodum bistro tabletop grill

by jeroxie February 5, 2012

When I first moved from Melbourne to Sydney, my first Sunday morning was spent at Woollahra Festival. I scored tickets to Brave New Chefs II from Mish. It has been awhile now but it was an event where 3 relatively young chefs presented and demonstrated a dish each. The 3 dishes were stunning and flavoursome in their own right. After the hour long event, Mister and I headed to the main festival area. The area was alive with kids and activities.

Suckling pig ham

Our first Christmas in Sydney. Our first Christmas that we spent it with just the two of us and @tekkieboy. Back  in Melbourne, we usually celebrate and spend Christmas holidays with other “orphans”.  Many of us are overseas students many moon ago and so our families are usually not with us in Australia. We built [...]

Spanish Chorizo con carne

by jeroxie January 5, 2012

My first recipe of the year. Let’s kick off with something a little porky and a little spicy. And best of all, super easy. The boys were out picking up a couch. Well, the story is like that. We had a three seater couch that would not fit through the doorway to the lounge area so it sat in the hallway for a few weeks. We finally got rid of it on Gumtree and at the same time a friend was getting his two seater couch and picking up another larger one. Long story short, we scored a two seater. We have a couch. Finally.

Merry Christmas Eggnog!

by jeroxie December 22, 2011

Merry Christmas to all! This is the first Christmas that Mister and I will be spending together in Sydney. While we miss our friends back in Melbourne and love to spend Christmas with them, we are ok to spend a rather quiet Christmas after a hectic year. I am taking the opportunity to catch up on blogs, reading and my recent obsession – The Sims! LOL

Panini stuffed with a simple tomato salad and Spanish chorizo

by jeroxie December 15, 2011

In my second week in Sydney, I suffered one of the worst hangovers ever. The weather was beach perfect but I had to lay in bed sick from the previous night. Sparkling, beer, cider and shots do not mix well. Anyway, Mister was starving. I thought I felt ok to leave the house. We got to Bruschetteria, I stared at the menu and felt sick. The open face sausage bruschetta that Mister had was so good. I had a small bite but that was all I could eat. Back to the dark room and wasted one gorgeous sunny day in Sydney. And I regret it. After that sunny weekend, we only had rain in Sydney. What happened there Sydney? Where is the beautiful blue sky?

Revisit – Miss Jackson, St. Kilda

by jeroxie October 11, 2011

I took my mum on a round about car ride to the St. Kilda farmers market. With Mister away, I have been relying on the Tomtom to guide me to places. However with a destination that does not exactly have an actual address, it makes it really difficult. For me. I really regret the times that I am so busy tweeting while Mister and not looking at where he is driving, what roads he uses and all the stuff that drivers are aware of.

International Incident Cobbler Party – Veal osso buco cobbler

by jeroxie September 28, 2011

Anyway, I always have good intentions when thinking about what to cook for #iip and I usually end up not exactly cooking the dish I had in my mind. My hangover wasn’t too bad but it was enough not to wake up too early and making my way down to the farmers market. Too lazy and really can’t be bothered to track all the way to Slow Food. I ended up getting veal osso busco instead.

Chipotle roasted chicken wings

by jeroxie September 19, 2011

What a lovely weekend and I wish I was in a better state to enjoy it. I felt really lethargic and totally unmotivated. I wanted to cook something really fuss free but tasty. My initial plan leading to the weekend was to slow roast a hogget and make a pie or something. Alas those ambitious ideas were thrown out of the window and replaced by this humble and simple oven roasted chicken wings.

Pulled chicken burger

by jeroxie September 11, 2011

What do you mean pulled chicken? What is pulled meat? Basically pulled meat means slow cooking protein that can shredded by hand after. Well, that is what I think anyway. Do you agree? What do you think pulled chicken or meat is?

Eggless maple and candied walnut ice cream

by jeroxie September 4, 2011

Hello Spring! Or is it? In some parts of the world, seasons start on the first day of the month. Australia is one of them but if we stay true to the dates and follow dates that Earth passes four special points in its orbit about the Sun, the Spring starts on the 23rd of September. Technically, we are still in the winter season! Sad news to many but good news to many hayfever sufferers like myself. But actually it doesn’t really matter, my hayfever season has started for me…. Let’s hope this season ain’t as bad last year.

Pressure cooker goat ragu with pappardelle

by jeroxie August 3, 2011

I was never a fan of the pressure cooker until I watched the contestants use it and how quickly a piece of tough meat turns into melting morsel of delight. I have heard good and bad things about the pressure cooker. And I was still not convinced about the final flavour of the dish.
