African Day 2010 – Bobotie

by jeroxie May 24, 2010

First of all, I will like to thank Casey of Eating, Garden & Living in Bulgaria for organising an African Day event to learn and experience the African culture through food.

I love Moroccan cuisine. The colours of the food is very bold to match their aromatic spices. As usual, I like to take myself out of the comfort zone and also wanted to make sure of this opportunity to explore other African foods.

Vegemite Pasta – A hangover cure

by jeroxie October 11, 2009

We spent most of the day curling in bed or on the couch feeling very sorry for ourselves. I not only missed out on Collingwood farmers market, I didn’t end up getting any groceries at all. There was hardly any food in the fridge and it hurt to think too much. I remembered that I read about vegemite pasta on one of the blogs. I had bacon, the new vegemite (Cheesybite) and spaghetti. I could make it. It sounded like a good hangover dinner.

Are you peko peko?

by jeroxie October 9, 2009

Mister finally finished his exams. It isn’t easy continuing to study and to work at the same time ever since he left University. It takes a lot of dedication and focus. It is a admirable quality. I know how hard it is. I did a 10 week course earlier this year and I was so exhausted by the end of it. Worth it but really hard work and a few sleepless nights.

Peko Peko is just a stone throw away fromMister’s workplace so I decided to walk over and have a nice simple dinner together. This little funky and cute restaurant is located amongst both offices and residential buildings. Most of the lunch punters are office workers in the area and according to Mister, it is so pack and hard to get a table. Plus, food usually takes a while to be served. So he advised to have an early 11.30am lunch or a a late 3pm lunch. Dinner crowd seems reasonable and we got a table quite easily so if you do want to try this place, come in the evening instead of fighting with the lunch crowd.

Sung’s Kitchen

by jeroxie September 13, 2009

It is undeniable that I love Fridays. One, there is no work the next day. Two, I get to catch up with my lovely friends. Three, I get to enjoy and share food and drinks with my lovely friends! One of my favourite Chinese restaurant has to be Sung’s Kitchen. With crab season almost over, Sung became our obvious dinner choice this week as all of us are working around the city area.

A Korean delight – Hallah

by jeroxie September 6, 2009

Another great night out with the girls and Mister. We started out at Miss Libertine where Ms K’s man was DJ-ing that evening. And it was the first time I caught up with Ms C since she came back from Singapore 5 weeks ago. After a couple of bottles of wine, we were hungry and decided to take short walk to North Melbourne to check out this Korean restaurant – Hallah

A timeless French experience – France-Soir

by jeroxie August 22, 2009

Walking into France-Soir was like going back in time. Old fashion dark wood & brass bar & service counter. French waiters in black & white outfits weaving gracefully through the small & narrow dining area.

Wild rabbit stew on Cous cous

by jeroxie August 15, 2009

My failures with the rabbit has been countless. The dish always ends up too dry or tasting like paper and me ending up in tears of desperation! So I decided to braise the rabbit in a slow cooker this time.

Home-cooked bak kut teh

by jeroxie July 12, 2009

Bak kut teh is a very popular dish both in Singapore & Malaysia. This will be a usual late night supper dish that I will have after clubbing in Singapore. The group will sit around the table, eat the meat, drink the soup, talk about the night and start sobering up before heading home! This is basically a pork rib soup that is slow cooked for hours with chinese herbs, spices and heaps of whole garlic cloves. There are other ingredients like fried tofu, dried mushrooms, ofals and salted vegetables that may be added to the soup. There are 2 different style of soup – one of them will be a clearer but peppery (white pepper) version and the other is a darker version (more soya sauce). And usually, it will be served with red cut chilli with dark sauce as the condiment.

Friday night out at Culter & Co. and Black Pearl

by jeroxie July 12, 2009

Cumulus has been a rather regular dining place for some of us and we have been looking forward to Cutler & Co (55-57 Getrude Street, Fitzroy) for awhile. I had a rather full on day before dinner and all I could only think of a dirty martini when asked for drinks. Wendy ordered a bottle of French white to start the night. I was pretty happy and felt more relaxed with my Martini.

Singapore Chom Chom

by jeroxie July 5, 2009

Did not feel like having dinner at home but just wanted to have something cheap and fast. We felt like having a more ‘local’ fare tonight. Chom Chom (188 Bourke S, Melbourne) is a place where there is a mixture of singapore/malaysian food. Menu consists of starters like curry puffs & spring rolls. Shared dishes like chinese stir frys and individual dishes like Nasi Lemak, laksa and much much more.

Thursday night out at Bar Lourinha

by jeroxie July 4, 2009

Been meaning to return to Bar Lourinhna (37 Lt. Collin St.) for another good meal. Thoroughly enjoyed myself the last time I was here. And so expectations were high and to be met.

Wendy was the first to arrived and it was hard to get a table for 8. The dining area on the 1st level is small and narrow. So it isn’t catered for a big group. We were stuck to the low tables & stools which is the ‘waiting are’ up in the front end. As usual, were spoilt for choices. Fortunately, we had a large group and all of us could order what we wanted and share. We ended up ordering 12 dishes and 4 desserts!

This is the first time I tasted and cooked a saltbush lamb. So I just wanted to keep it simple. The marbling on the lamb was so beautiful. The And I just knew it was going to taste amazing! Well, just as long as I do not over cook the rack. Timing was crucial. I [...]
