Kappaya is all about simple organic Japanese soul food. It is quietly tucked away in the convent and just next to Lentils as Anything. The menu is small and simple. The shoebox interior is narrow and dimly lighted. It will probably fit 12 people snugly. The outside will be a much nicer place to be in summer.

I had a short stint at Lau’s kitchen when I just got out of uni and needed extra cash and saving up for a house. II Fornio is just located next to Lau’s but I’ve never had any interest in trying it out. And of course it didn’t help that I worked in the evenings and it’s closed by the time I got in. But even with the lunch shift that I had, it didn’t seem appealing at that time. Or maybe I was just a poor graduate that was trying to save up money for a house so anything that looks fanciful would have been to expensive for me

Move forward to 2010, hangover and dehydrated from a night’s out of fun, Billy, Mister and I made the effort to finally pay this a visit. Our visit was definitely motivated by the fact that this place has been recently acquired by St. Ali and Philippa Sibley is rocking their ovens.

I walk past Panette many times during South Melbourne market weekdays. It always seem packed with breakfast and lunch crowd. So I took the opportunity to visit this place when Mr. S said to catch up for lunch.

I ordered the meatball linguine. It was a mixture of slow cooked veal and pork meatballs with linguine in tomato sugo and topped with thin slices of Parmesan cheese. The meatballs were very juicy and flavourful. It was a very decent plate of pasta. I will give it a benefit of a doubt that the pasta is freshly made or else it means that it is very over cooked!By the way, I like how the sugo coats the pasta. Great consistency.

The thing that I miss about working in Melbourne CBD is the variety and quality of good lunch food. Now that I am in South Melbourne, I hardly venture around the area. It is like what @jettingjoyce said, a black hole of good food and I totally agree. Don't get me wrong. There are nice places for food in South Melbourne but few are affordable to lunch everyday.

After the trip from Hobart and not much food in the refrigerator, it was an excuse to travel to the CBD for some good and affordable lunch. First stop was N Lee Bakery. This is one of the only places in the city that serves Banh Mi or Vietnamese roll. It is definitely a meal in a bun. Carbohydrates, protein and fresh salad! Banh Mi starts with a short Vietnamese style baguette or roll. It has a thin layer of butter and pate. And then followed by the cold meats. You can choose to have cold cuts pork (original) or chicken breasts slices. It is then topped with shredded carrots, thinly sliced onions, fresh coriander, freshly sliced red chillies (optional) and then drizzled lightly with light soy sauce. $5 for a roll in the city is very affordable. But you will be able to get it at $3.80 in the suburbs.

It seems that most people that I know on twitter have been raving about Miss Jackson. It had been one of the little cafes that I have been keened to try and to understand what makes this place so special. I knew from reading tweets that Miss Jackson is dog friendly as well. So I thought it would a great idea to head over after St. Kilda Farmers.

We took the table next to a dog bowl outside the courtyard. It was quite a lovely day to it outside and soak in some early autumn sun. But with Tekkie in a snappy mood, it proved to be a bad idea. He was snapping at almost everyone that walked past. He was especially bad with the girl that was serving us. Initially, we thought it might be her striking blue shoes but she took it off and he still went for her. Poor chick! I think she was quite upset about it. And I was embarrassed.

I was going through the photos the other day and realised that I have taken many food and coffee shots of St. Ali but never blogged since the one I did in August last year - name of post. It deserves a part 2 and even 3. I tend to visit it when I have a long morning at work or when I just feel like chilling out by myself and away from work. It isn't exactly the quietest cafe in South Melbourne. It is always buzzing with people, the slayer hard at work, beans roasting in the far end and sipping of coffee and kling klang of cutlery.

The usual sushi takeaway places in Melbourne displays neat rows after rows of sushi rolls. The popular ones are teriyaki chicken rolls, california rolls, avocado rolls, beef teriyaki rolls and the list goes on. And the usual little Japanese restaurants that we know and love usually serve pretty bento boxes. Origami is one of the Japanese cheap eats in this area but is not your typical Japanese restaurant or take away that we are accustomed to. The menu here is simple and they are only opened Mon - Fri from 11.30 - 2.30pm.

Actually there is no menu, food is served from the counter. The food is all cooked and prepped in a little back kitchen and this place is run by 2 old Japanese couple. The sushi and sashimi resides on one end and on the other, the cooked food like chicken teriyaki, beef curry, tempura and deep fried chicken and potato balls.

I love kopitiam mamak. The first that I do when I land in Singapore airport is to head to Changi Kopitiam to pick up a kaya toast and a Milo dinosaur before heading for the luggage. Can you imagine my excitement when Old Town Kopitiam first opened on Little Bourke. Alas it was not meant to be. I was totally disappointed. You can find out why here. So I was really skeptical about this new place and was not keen until I read the delicious tweets from @tummyrumbles and the blog post from essayeats.

I headed down to the city on Monday for a quick round of Roti even though I brought my lunch in to work. The new Old Town Kopitiam Mamak (OTKM) is located on the top foyer of QV. It is such a strategic location sitting next to 3 degrees, Sensis building just a stone throw away and below apartment blocks filled with mostly Asian students. And it is definitely more mamak style than the one on Little Bourke.

This little bohemian style cafe is tucked away on Napier Street. They serve organic rainforest alliance coffee and support local produce. This explains why the prices here are a little pricey for the food that they serve. I have to say the coffee here is pretty good. Perfect temperature and a lovely deep aroma and flavour.
Coffee to me is something that I need when half a eye is opened to a new day. It never really meant anything more than a stimulant. But after I started this food blog and being exposed to new things and friends, I am beginning to appreciate the humble coffee bean. I am still no expert and there is so much to read, learn and drink!

I like the fitout at Market Lane. It has a very spacious set up and one could smell the aromatic coffee beans in the air. This place only serves a small selection of pastries, cakes and bread and home-made jam. So do not expect any other foods and not for anyone that has a big appetite and looking for a decent meal. It is all about the coffee here.

Living across the river has its perks and one of which is that there are heaps of lovely cafes around. When I tweeted that I needed suggestions of good places around the South Yarra station, a few tweeps suggested the obvious - Outpost.

The Outpost was one of the extended arms of St. Ali so we expected not good but great coffee. We love the open space, the coffee machine, the kitchen stations and the menu written on big butcher paper and stuck on walls. No partitions or barriers.

Auction rooms has been around since last year but a little embarassed to say that this is our first visit. This place used to be an auction room and hence its name but now it is a cafe and a coffee roastery that is open 7 days a week.

We made an early start and went window shopping for bathroom and kitchen ideas at Ikea first. There was so much to do but we still need to eat a proper big breakfast. We were heading to Victoria market next and I remembered @mutemonkey speaking highly of the coffee at Auction rooms. We made our way to Errol street. This area is lined with cafes and little restaurants. I took note of a Malaysian restaurant called Baba house. It has been added to my list of places to eat before 2010 ;)

Mister (Th0i3) was not fully satisfied from our lunch at Min Lokal and suggested that we checked out Monsieur truffee on Smith Street. Can I do it? A chocolate indulgence straight after lunch? I tried to convince myself that I would have just one hot chocolate.

As many cafes around here, the interior is furnished with odd pieces of furniture, decoratives and beaded curtains. And I do adore the paper origami chairs. They had little plates of tasting chocolate bits and I tried them all. They were so good! You should be there to see the big grin on my face. Heavenly!

Having heard good things from fellow food bloggers, Jess and Cindy, we decided to head down to Min Lokal for lunch. We used to live around the area but it has been awhile since we have moved. But Mister remembered that it used to be something else before Min Lokal took over. It is always nice to find cafes like these in the residential part of the Fitzroy. It is tucked away from the busy streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood and I guess that is what makes it a more relaxing cafe to hang out and feel lazy.

The name, OldTown Kopitiam, derived from a small coffeeshop in Ipoh (Malaysia) called Old town. This is where white coffee originates as well. White coffee is roasted mixing modern technigues and old skool Malaysian practices. It ends up with a lighter colour and hence the name. The aromatic coffee beans are well known and theymade it on the shelves of supermarkets in Malaysia. They later opened a modern kopitiam (coffee shop) and the rest is history.

Dead Man Espresso has been opened a little over 3 weeks. When I visited it the first time, I believe they were still installing the dish washer at the back. When the weather gets warmer, tables were be placed along the sidewalk and I believe that the rooftop will be opened to the public.
