KoKo Black – A Nuffnang Chocolate Meetup

by jeroxie August 24, 2010

I love meetups and meeting new people. So when it came for volunteers to help organise a Nuffnang meetup, I was probably the first to raise my hand. And it was lovely to be able to co-host this chocolate event with lovely, super adorable and talented, Violet of Violet Le Beaux.

Chocolate cheesepots with black cherries compote

by jeroxie May 28, 2010

I am sure many Australians are aware who Donna Hay is. I have never really been a big fan of Donna Hay but in her recent 50th Anniversary edition, I could not help myself but to bake the chocolate cake that was on the cover. Of course, mine did not look anywhere like hers. So I said yes when Mardi of Eat.Live.Write.Travel asked me to participate in a Hay Hay it’s Donna Day event (HHDD) that was initiated by Chez Us, I had to say yes and hoping to redeem myself.

Charcoal Lane, Fitzroy

by jeroxie February 5, 2010

I first visited Charcoal Lane in September last year. This white building used to be home of Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). I have shady memories of walking past a prominent black, yellow and red coloured building almost everyday to and from Uni. And now it has become this white and somewhat majestic building. From the outside, one would never think that this is a restaurant. It will be good if there are big glass windows or glass doors to peer into this elegant looking restaurant.

A day in Mornington Peninsula

by jeroxie January 19, 2010

I can’t remember the last time Mister and I did a day trip together. And I did not know where to start. So as usual, I turned to twittverse in the beginning of the week to ask for suggestions of wineries and I had an over-whelming response. So thanks to everyone for the suggestions. So I made a little ‘tag-cloud’ to illustrate the responses that I received from twittverse.

Roast pork loin with apple and cherry sauce

by jeroxie December 28, 2009

We have been festive Christmas orphans on most years. With no family in Australia, we usually spend the Christmas holidays with other festive orphans. It was no difference this year. A small group of us decided to have Christmas Eve dinner at Hwaro. But before we headed to Hwaro, a few of us were hanging out at our place having Martinis. To add to our festive mood, we had bottles of soju and beers during dinner. So my grand plan for my Christmas dinner was slowly slipping after one soju at a time.

Nuffnang Xmas Party 2009

by jeroxie December 21, 2009

A big thanks to Nuffnang for organising this get together with fellow food bloggers. I was glad that I have @jettingjoyce and @Th0i3 with me. But it was very refreshing to meet other bloggers that do not blog about food! It was a good mix of people. I am a food blogger so naturally I took better photos of food than people. I need to brush up that skill though. Now I cannot use any of those ‘people’ photos. And even the food photos did not turn up good. I shall blame it on the numerous glasses of vino that I had that night. Imagine my poor head and I had to work the next day.

Proud Mary

by jeroxie December 17, 2009

Collingwood must be very pleased to have the inclusion of Proud Mary to the growing list good cafes and restaurants. It seems to be an explosion of new coffee places opening every week. Cafes with roasters, cafes with expensive Synesso coffee machines, once a day cupping sessions and the list goes on. Coffee drinking has always been popular but now it is trendy. But how much do we know about it? Is it a novelty and I guess only the strongest will survive.

ICI Cafe

by jeroxie December 11, 2009

Renovation is almost done. It is just the bathroom rails and replacing the window in the dining area. We have moved back and is living quite shabbily but at least all 3 of us are home. Nothing beats home! Home Sweet Home.
This little bohemian style cafe is tucked away on Napier Street. They serve organic rainforest alliance coffee and support local produce. This explains why the prices here are a little pricey for the food that they serve. I have to say the coffee here is pretty good. Perfect temperature and a lovely deep aroma and flavour. I will be glad to come back just to have a nice latte, sit in one of the little tables and read the papers. It is such a ‘lazy’ place to hang out.

Outpost in South Yarra

by jeroxie November 26, 2009

Living across the river has its perks and one of which is that there are heaps of lovely cafes around. When I tweeted that I needed suggestions of good places around the South Yarra station, a few tweeps suggested the obvious – Outpost.

The Outpost was one of the extended arms of St. Ali so we expected not good but great coffee. We love the open space, the coffee machine, the kitchen stations and the menu written on big butcher paper and stuck on walls. No partitions or barriers.

Auction Rooms

by jeroxie November 1, 2009

Auction rooms has been around since last year but a little embarassed to say that this is our first visit. This place used to be an auction room and hence its name but now it is a cafe and a coffee roastery that is open 7 days a week.

We made an early start and went window shopping for bathroom and kitchen ideas at Ikea first. There was so much to do but we still need to eat a proper big breakfast. We were heading to Victoria market next and I remembered @mutemonkey speaking highly of the coffee at Auction rooms. We made our way to Errol street. This area is lined with cafes and little restaurants. I took note of a Malaysian restaurant called Baba house. It has been added to my list of places to eat before 2010 ;)

Teriyaki poached salmon on ramen

by jeroxie October 29, 2009

My love for eating fish comes from my Grandma and Mum. I was quite sickly when I was younger, Grandma and Mum will make sure that I have almost everyday for lunch and dinner. And it was the same kind of fish dish- Steam cod with ginger. I do not remember ever not liking it or pushing it away. I guess I was never the fussy eater.

I have been cooking more salmon dishes a lot more these days. Summer is fast approaching and Mister and I are still pigging out so I decided to make something healthy, light and really easy to cook. It does take a longer cooking time but you do not need to watch over it.

Min Lokal

by jeroxie October 25, 2009

Having heard good things from fellow food bloggers, Jess and Cindy, we decided to head down to Min Lokal for lunch. We used to live around the area but it has been awhile since we have moved. But Mister remembered that it used to be something else before Min Lokal took over. It is always nice to find cafes like these in the residential part of the Fitzroy. It is tucked away from the busy streets of Fitzroy and Collingwood and I guess that is what makes it a more relaxing cafe to hang out and feel lazy.

Saltbush lamb roast on Israeli couscous

by jeroxie October 23, 2009

I bought some Israeli couscous from Victoria Market a few weeks ago and never got round to making any till last week. I had a complete disaster. There wasn’t anything wrong with the couscous. It is easy to cook but it was the not so fresh ingredients that I bought. After a big night out last Friday, we ended up nursing ourselves on the couch on Saturday day and thus missed out on farmers market and all those fresh lovely ingredients. I bought some calamari, mangoes and avocado next day at Footscray to make a nice light salad with the couscous and it flopped. It failed because the calamari was not fresh, the mango and avocado was at their near end of life. It just shows how fresh and good ingredients plays such an important role in how a plate of food taste and make me feel! I could not finish my dinner. It was really bad.

Salmon with wild rocket salad & Kaya toast

by jeroxie October 20, 2009

I bought some wild rocket from Gaswork farmers market on Saturday. They look quite different from the rocket that we are used to. The darker green leaves are narrow and tasted much more peppery. I love the little yellow flowers sticking out from the bunch. It reminded me that Spring is here even though the morning was cold and wet. I bought a bunch and had in mind to get some fresh salmon this Sunday lunch.
