Khao San Road

by jeroxie February 26, 2010

This week I shall bring you another local that we just stumbled upon. There seems to be new cafes and restaurants that have been springing up in our local in the last couple of years. It may not become the next Brunswick or Smith Street but I have to admit that I never thought I find nice places in my local to eat! But my mind is slowly changing.

Khao San Road may sound familiar to some of you that has travelled and visited Bangkok. It is a famous street in Bangkok that attracts backpackers and budget tourists. I would say that is quite a bohemian type area that also attracts local artists and party people. Having said that this restaurant is not emulating this famous street. Dark wood chairs and tables occupy the space. The usual Buddha artwork hangs on the walls and some of the decorative table lamps have priced tags on them.

My first guest post – How to prepare proper fishcakes

by jeroxie February 23, 2010

I was over the moon when Divina of Sense & Serendipity asked if I would be a guest blogger for her blog. Actually, I did panic a little as I have little knowledge of healthy foods. So this was a real challenge for me and one that I wanted to do well.

Some of you may find Divina quite familiar. She was my first guest blogger while I was away in Bali and crafted this beautiful post – Pineapple Quinoa with Goji Berries and Arugula. Her blog is full of yummy but nutritional recipes. Her stories are heart warming and she has always been supportive not only to me but many other bloggers.

Cookbook Challenge W14 (Japanese) – Tartare of Tuna with Goat Cheese

by jeroxie February 21, 2010

This week’s challenge proved to be more challenging in many ways. Firstly, I did not own any Japanese cookbook and hardly have any real reference at all. Secondly, looking for the garnishes was a real challenge. I wanted to do justice to the recipe and felt a little pressure to get it absolutely right.

Thirdly, weeekends are usually packed with activities and I think I had bitten off more than I could chew this time. Pamela from My Man’s Belly was in Melbourne for a short visit and suggested that we catch up. Both of us discovered each other through a Food Exchange program. And it is exciting to meet a food blogger not from Australia but from LA! She is such a darling and bought us a really awesome food package.

Cookbook Challenge W13 (Love) – Pineapple Tarts

by jeroxie February 11, 2010

Valentine day falls on the first day of Chinese New Year. We have decided to spend it with friends as some of them have become like family. There isn’t much of a festive mood here as we are away from family. So this year, I thought it will be a good idea to make more effort in creating a mood by baking some Chinese New Year favourites.

I have no baking skills. Even when I follow the recipe, something is almost always wrong. So this time, I decided to test run a small batch and have time to make amendments before the New Year. The first batch turned out ugly but tasted good. And the second batch looked better. More presentable. I did increase the amount of cold water that the book had recommended.

Making Melbourne’s best dumplings

by jeroxie February 7, 2010

A conversation on twitter about dumplings when I posted my disappointment in Hutong and how hard it was to find good dumpling places in Melbourne. When I arrived here more than a decade to go, Camy was the place to go for good, cheap and yummy dumplings. The fried dumplings had a nice crispy bottom and juicy fillings. These days, they serve soggy fried dumplings that tastes like cardboard. Don’t get me wrong, there are good and reasonable places but how hard can it be to serve decent dumplings. They are relatively cheap, easy and quick to make.

Anyway, I believe that the conversation started with @thatjessho, @cloudcontrol and myself. And I thought it would be a great idea to have a dumplings party. We had a good response from twitterverse and tweeps were raising their hands to the occasion. We set a date and venue (much thanks to @thatjessho) and were pumped to attempt to make Melbourne’s best dumplings.

Meatless Day Challenge #5 – Spiced Congee with Zuchinni and Egg

by jeroxie January 21, 2010

I had a couple of ideas and was looking forward to creating this dish I had in my head. But Mister was having a little trouble with his wisdom tooth so this mystery recipe will have to wait. The skies have finally opened on Monday and started pouring. So it seems to be a good opportunity to make congee for dinner.

I had leftover rice from previous night so all I had to do was to simmer it with water. Just keep adding water till the rice ‘breaks’ slightly. And if you like the congee thick, just add enough of water. It really depends on your preference. But what is special about this congee is that I added spices to it.

Meatless Day Challenge #4 – Tofu salad with peanut sauce

by jeroxie January 15, 2010

It has been a busy and productive week. Beach, wineries, cooking challenges and looking for a new washer/dryer. The other exciting thing is that I start my new job this week. Gone are the days where I can spend a lot of time on blogging. It is time that I do some serious award winning projects. That aside, I will still continue with the challenges. I can find time. Just have to sleep lesser!

Daring Cooks Challenge – Chicken satay

by jeroxie January 12, 2010

The January 2010 DC challenge was hosted by Cuppy of Cuppylicious and she chose a delicious Thai-inspired recipe for Pork Satay from the book 1000 Recipes by Martha Day.
I have been wanting to join this challenge for the longest time ever! With the renovations out of the way (kind of), I was excited to start the Daring Cooks Challenge in January 2010. I was excited and pleased to find out that it is a satay challenge. I have not made satay before but a version of the peanut sauce over Christmas for Gado Gado. It was well loved and a few people has been asking me for the recipe. For this challenge, I tweaked it a little to make it creamier and more punchy.

Old Town Kopitiam Mamak QV Part 1

by jeroxie January 8, 2010

I love kopitiam mamak. The first that I do when I land in Singapore airport is to head to Changi Kopitiam to pick up a kaya toast and a Milo dinosaur before heading for the luggage. Can you imagine my excitement when Old Town Kopitiam first opened on Little Bourke. Alas it was not meant to be. I was totally disappointed. You can find out why here. So I was really skeptical about this new place and was not keen until I read the delicious tweets from @tummyrumbles and the blog post from essayeats.

I headed down to the city on Monday for a quick round of Roti even though I brought my lunch in to work. The new Old Town Kopitiam Mamak (OTKM) is located on the top foyer of QV. It is such a strategic location sitting next to 3 degrees, Sensis building just a stone throw away and below apartment blocks filled with mostly Asian students. And it is definitely more mamak style than the one on Little Bourke.

Chicken curry laksa

by jeroxie January 3, 2010

A brand new decade has started and I certainly believe it is a year of new beginnings and changes. I wonder what else 2010 has in store for us. But here are a few things that I will be looking forward to.

1. Our 10th year anniversary
2. 2010 World Cup in South Africa
3. Travel, travel, travel and hopefully a white Christmas
4. More cooking, eating and fun times with both old and new friends

Acar

by jeroxie December 29, 2009

I have not cooked for a larger group of people for a very long time. Since it was Mister’s birthday and the kitchen fully functional, I thought it will be a good idea to get people around for some nibbles and drinks. Acar or pickled vegetables is one of the side dishes that I made for Sunday.
Cookbook Challenge Week 6 – Acar
This dish is suitable for the Christmas downunder. It is summery, light and refreshing. The cookbook that I used from this challenge is Step by step cooking Balinese by Heinz von Holzen. This is simple and easy recipe to follow or to tweak. You can change the spices and aromatics and add herbs. Just remember the 1:1:1 ratio of water, sugar and vinegar and the rest is up to you to be creative

Meatless Day Challenge – What do you do with tofu tempeh

by jeroxie December 23, 2009

Tofu Trek is a new tofu/vegetarian stall in Victoria market. Most likely a recent change of hand. There are more varieties of tofu and tempeh than before. What caught my eye was a soy based tofu tempeh and bought 2 tubs. I love tofu and tempeh. It works as a great substitute for meat. Plus, we are taking cue from Mellie of tummyrumbles where she does a Meatless Monday and so we decided to do a Meatless Day at least once a week. This will be the first week that we are kicking off this challenge.

Spiced steamed fish with simple vegetables and fried rice

by jeroxie December 22, 2009

The rangehood was finally installed and the kitchen ceiling had been painstakingly painted. It was back, arms and neck breaking work. The end does not seem near. The task list seemed to have grown after each tick. I know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I can almost see a passage through the hallway. But there is much to do before Christmas and I am beginning to panic. I think I have given myself a big mountain to climb this year!

Wabi Sabi and a chocolate croissant

by jeroxie December 4, 2009

We are beginning to love Collingwood all over again. Having lived here for 4 years before, this place has changed but hasn’t? It is still gritty and somewhat ugly but it has always been full of character. But over the years, more cafes and littl restaurants have sprung up along this street. More yuppies have moved in and the face of Collingwood is changing.

Mister suggested that we headed to Collingwood for lunch as he wanted to try Goshen (Korean) and have some bibimbap. But alas, the place is closed for lunch. We went past Wabi Sabi when we visited Monsieur Truffe awhile back. This place has been around for 5 years and I am ashame to say that this is our first visit.

Yim Yam

by jeroxie November 30, 2009

Yim Yam was discovered by Mister about a month ago. He was quite excited to try it as Matt Preston has named the crispy rice salad as one of the 5 dishes that a person should try in Melbourne. That is a big call and I was equally curious to try it out as well.
