It has been claimed that Footscray is fortunate to have Station Hotel as a local. We have been there on several occasions and it is a nice casual pub that serves good food, beers and even has a decent wine list. The pub is split into 3 areas. The front area where it houses the pool table and some high and low tables. The  proper dining room area is at the back where usually customers with booking are served. And there is a lovely small courtyard area for those that choose to sit outdoors.

I have to admit that the first couple of times of visit has been a little disappointing. The boys loved it but I just did not find anything quite exciting to write about. The dishes I ordered was rather bland. But then boys being boys, they love their steak. So I shall start with a 300g Wanga Wanga scotch fillet that Mister ordered. It came with a crisp and chucky fries and a big bed of tomato and onion salad. The steak was cooked to perfection or rather the way Mister wanted it.

And what does a girl have in a pub? Not salad of course! If you are a pig lover like me, then the braised pig trotter “Pierre Koffman” with lamb sweetbreads with pomme mousseline and Madiera sauce will be your cup of tea. Pomme mousseline is one of the most indulgent way of having mash potatoes. It is usually made with loads of butter and  double cream. Super yum! The pig trotter is so tender and gelatinous and went so well with the sticky and deep Madiera sauce. I was a very happy girl this time.

The menu changes quite often. The last time we were here for brunch, I had the Serrano ham and spanner crab croquettes with romesco sauce. It was a distance memory but I did quite enjoy this dish. The croqeuttes had a very nice crunchy exterior followed by the creaminess of the ham and crab.

Mr. R ordered a French onion soup with Gruyere crouton as a starter. The soup was sticky and thick as it should be. But I did remember that it lacked flavour. Three of us did struggle to finish it. Anyway, it seems that it has been taken off the menu.

And also from previous visits, we did try their sticky date pudding. I was a little disappointed that the ice cream was store bought and the pudding was quite dry. But like I said, their menu changes quite often and it has been a while since we had any desserts at Station Hotel.

Station Hotel is definitely known for its big steak and super rich and heavy dishes. Some of the dishes can be a little of a hit and miss. But I hope it sticks around for a long time :)

What is a classic pub dessert?

Sounds a bit hit and miss by the sounds of it but the gems are well done :) Did you see Fergus Henderson on Masterchef and the way he made the pig's trotter (he deboned it and stuffed it with mash). That sounded heavenly! :o

I love the Station Hotel. One of the few places my entire family can go and all members will be waxing lyrical! I've totally forgotten to post about my birthday dinner there this year, whoops.
