I’ve been enoying the trips to farmers market every Saturday lately. It is such a change from Victoria & Footscray market were most stall holders are too busy to have a chat and seems to be in a rush all the time.
St. Kilda farmers market (Peanut Farm Reserve, Chaucer St, St. Kilda) happens every 1st week of the month. As usual, it will be good to early. It has a really strong sense of community vibe. Toddlers running around, parents relaxing on the chairs and tables spread out in the middle of the market and the buzz of excited punters like me.
The guys from Glenora were really helpful with our silly questions about the wild nettles and mushrooms. (View risotto recipe here) No cultivated nettles this year as the soil is still warm and not suitable for growth. And wild field mushrooms are still flourishing on our land at this time of the year. So much to learn from little chit chats. They were quite amuse with our rabblings but I am sure that they are used to the ignorance of the city dwellers by now. Even some punters next to us were smiling at our constant interogation! And one of them turned out to be @stickyfingers that I follow on twitter!
Anyway, bagged a few goodies from Glenora and headed to my beef man (Allen) from Warialda beef. Scored some porterhouse steaks and ox cheeks. He promised to email me a french recipe for the ox cheeks. This time I may wait for the recipe to appear in my inbox!
Continued our wandering and bagging fresh fruits & vegetables. If you do visit this market, make sure you drop by Grampians organic and say hi to Blakey & Meg. Such a lovely old couple that will just keep chatting to us and getting me to stuff more kale into the bag.
And I cannot walk past Garfield Barramundi without getting the largest piece of smoked barramundi. Just works so well as a brunch/Sunday lunch dish. (Click here for more photos from the market)
The only disappointment is the weak chai. Good chai (in my opinion) should be a velvety texture and rich spicy aroma. Defintely did not give me the morning kick that I needed.
Had a yumcha craving today, so we decided to head to Mahjong for an early lunch. Turned out to be a pretty nice day of grocery shopping and eating adverture.
