When anyone mention Reuben sandwich, I think of Katz Deli in New York!
Layers of meat must be generous. It must have cheese and then something sour or tangy like a good sauerkraut and Russian dressing to tie it all together. And never white bread or multigrain but rye. The one at Katz ticked all boxes. I will have loved to show you a photo but for some reason, I lost it and Mister lost one that he had taken too! Must we fly back to New York again? Any excuse will do right? If you are ever in New York, you must hit Katz. It is an institution in New York. And hey, do you remember the scene from Harry met Sally? Check it out below. The place still looks exactly the same!
The Essen Restaurant & Beer Cafe has created a version of Katz Deli’s famous Reuben Sandwich. I jumped on the invitation to check it out. This Reuben sandwich lunch is only available on Thursday and Fridays for only $22.50. You may think that this may be a stretch but this sandwich uses marinated beef brisket on German rye bread and Gruyere cheese. It is accompanied by Hungarian sauerkraut, Russian dressing and housemade pickles and includes an ice cold beer and chips. Seriously good value and I wished my office is a skip and a hop away.
Verdict? It ticked all my boxes! This is by far the best Reuben sandwich that I’ve tried in Melbourne and Sydney. And of course, I will love to have more layers of brisket but it is generous enough. The chips were amazing. Crunchy outside and fluffy inside. The pickles are all house made and amazing! I love the presentation and I ate it all! It is lip smacking good and if you are fortunate enough to be close by, do it!
See all these jars of house made pickles? Awesome MAX!
Oh! And I love this horseradish relish. If I remembered correctly, it is from Victoria. The beetroot version is seriously addictive. Must have!
Just a reminder – Bring an appetite!
