Cycling is not my forte. But I am determine to be a better cyclist. My goal by end of this year is to be able to commute to work by bike. Cycling in Sydney is much harder than Melbourne. It is hardly linked by secured or rather safe bike paths. I will have to cycle on the roads, on bus lanes and watch out for zoned out pedestrians that don’t give a hoot about cyclist and look where they are walking. This is my observation and amongst bike friends. One need to be very fit and alert to cycle in Sydney. But I am determine to commute to work on a bike by year end.
It was my first bike ride to Bondi after getting my tyres changed. And I’m glad that I took the bullet and cycled those hills. I knew that when we went downhill, it means that we need to cycle back up after. It was challenging but rewarding. It was a beautiful sunny day for cycling as well. Bondi from the top looks amazing. The water and the sky were just shades of blue.
To be perfectly honest, I was motivated by the thought of having a big hearty brunch or lunch after the ride. Let’s climb this hill! I can eat fries and burgers and everything calories high because I have climbed hill after hill. Disclaimer – I ride and exercise to maintain my weight and get fit. So if you are riding to lose weight, then might be a good idea to eat more healthy.
After making way back up to Bondi Road, we headed straight to Panama House. It came high recommended by colleagues at work and one of their favourite breakfast/brunch cafe in Bondi at the moment. It was not as packed as I thought it will be. I guess coming from Surry which queuing is a nom, waiting 5 minutes for the staff to clean up a table is a piece of cake. We got ourselves an orange juice each and Mister wanted to try the coffee. The orange juice was definitely refreshing after the ride. The milk was frothed and poured well but the flavour was a touch lacking. Nice coffee but not one that I will go head over heels with.
What I do love is the condiment selection – Jalepeno, 7 chillies, tomato salsa and mustard sauces. We reckon it is the condiment that make this place a touch special. And then menu here screams influences from Mexico, Central and South America. And what I learnt is that this place is opened by the same people of The Corner House and The Shop.
Both Mister and I ordered from the lunch menu that starts from 12 – 3pm. Mister ordered the Southern fried chicken ($19). It was really super crispy on the outside and minus the oily or grease that many fried chicken has gone wrong. The meat is tender and juicy. I love the crackle of fried chicken skin when biten into. The chicken comes with a little spicy gumbo sauce, jalapeno and beautiful corn bread. I have not had authentic corn bread and so cannot compare. But I like what I tasted. It did taste very polenta but very moist. I am guessing buttermilk and butter? Nice dish and especially when one adds different condiments to each mouthful. Delicious!
I was toying between oven baked sweet forn fritter with tequila spiced gravlax salmon from the breakfast menu (7am – 1pm) and the Panama burger ($19). I chose the burger because of the hanger steak patty. I was not disappointed. The burger arrived and stood high. Nice soft bun the way I like it. Juicy beefy patty. Love the melted Swiss cheese over the top and they did not forget the pickles. Yes…. there are proper pickles in this burger. The only thing that is a little disappointing is the onion rings in the burger. A little more crispy please? Having said that, I was pleased as the burger was also served with a generous serving of thick cut chips and a side of jalapeno mayo. It was the condiments that made a difference again. I tried it with tomato salsa, 7 chillies and jalapeno. The 7 chilli sauce is the best combo. Every mouthful is different and delightful. The condiments are a clever addition.
This photo shows you how much I love the chip and the condiments. Mister is still thinking about the chicken and condiments till today. He wants to go back for more. And I want to go back and try other stuff on the menu. Maybe dinner? Interesting looking menu. And Panama House serves tacos and po boys. I have to check out what a Po Boy is. And it is only available from 1pm to close.
