New Shanghai, Bondi Junction

When I think of Bondi, I think of blue skies and blue waters and I think of a nice tan. The many times that we have tracked to Bondi, we always skip past Bondi Junction. However, food blogging has open my eyes to Bondi Junction and what it has to offer. There are so many shops, cafes and even Westfield shopping center that has an amazing food court. I have to admit that I am a little obsessed with food court. Can you tell the Asian-ness in me? Food courts and hawker centers are the love of my life. So much food in a contained area. What not to love?

My task was to check out New Shanghai at Bondi Junction. I wish I had a closer photo of all the dumplings on display. It was a really busy day and hard to get a shot with so many people crowding around to order, pick order and take orders.

There was only two of us and so much yummy sounding dishes on the menu. It was hard to pick from a rather large menu for a food court. There were all sorts of dumplings – steamed, fried and braised with sauces. Visit the New Shanghai website to check out the menu. Dumpling happy hour is only available at the Bondi Junction outlet – Dumplings are at half price from 6pm – 7pm weeknights! That is a seriously good deal if you are living in the area and has a craving for dumplings.

What not to love about xiao long bao? Eat with care as the soup in the dumplings burst out when you bite into it. I will prefer if the skin was a little thinner but the fillings is flavoursome and that is good enough for me!

The next dumplings was a little bit of a miss for me but Mister liked it a lot. It is called the Shepherd’s purse & pork wonton. The wontons are tossed with sesame butter, red chilli oil & spice. I guess I was expecting it look and taste more like chilli wontons that I absolutely love. It was not spicy as I thought it would be and I did not get the sesame butter. Mister, on the other hand, loved the flavour and the “freshness” of this dish. I was expecting more kick.

I had to try a cold dish. There is a weird love that I have for Chinese cold dish. We tried the beef shank stewed in five spice soy stock. It was delicately spiced and very moorish. I could eat it more like a snack! LOL It is like picking on cold chicken or sliced beef… you get the drift?

Mister orders fried rice in almost every Chinese restaurant or place that we go to. So what did he think? Rice was nice and fluffy but will be better if more beaded and fluffy. I still like it! And it was perfect for our meal. Must order!

I know that New Shanghai is famous for its dumplings. But I save the best of the last and it is not dumplings. It’s deep fried calamari coated with salted egg yolk. Can I just shout out O-M-G?!?! Heart attack on a plate? Hell yes! Will I be back for more? HELL YES! For those that love salted egg yolk crab will understand how good this taste like. Freaking awesome MAX! Must MUST order…. you only live once :)
