While we were at Bali, this is where we spent more of our time at. Some of you may find this pretentious or a little snobby. But we had some of the best moments and memories in Ku De Ta. After the first couple of days of deception and fending off beach hawkers, we decided that we will check out Ku De Ta.
Ku De Ta is a lovely beachfront location in Seminyak. The deckchairs faces the beautiful waves, there are waiting staff in abundance as it was the low season when we visited Bali. We did get a lot of attention and great service. We became really chatty with a couple of them. We could leave our belongings on the deck chairs and enjoy the waves together. The sunset was absolutely beautiful and honestly, the martinis they serve here ROCKS! I dare say they beat many of the bars back in Melbourne hands down and the presentations were spot on. It did come with a price tag of 100 000 rupiah ($12) which is pretty high end in Bali but worth it though.
It was just great sipping on lovely martinis and watching the beautiful and captivating sunset. This was just one of the highlights of the trip. Nature was just showing off and have every right to do so. I wish that I could just stay here and watch it again and again. I was a little overwhelmed by it. We both needed this break badly. For Mister, he has been working so hard and it was a very well deserved break. And for me, I needed a break to think about my next steps. I just needed to get away from a not too great experience at work. So which is why I was so overwhelmed by the peace and the beauty that I did shed a little tear.
1st martini – Mandarin Sunset which is vodka married with lychee liqueur, freshly plucked lychees, lifted with lemongrass syrup and then lightly shaken with freshly pressed apple juice. The balance was fantastic. Sweet, sour, strong, aromatic and refreshing.
2nd martini – Raspberry and lemongrass martini which is freshly plucked raspberries muddled with our homemad lemongrass syrup then shaken with a hint of cassis and a healthy measure of raspberry vodka.
3rd martini – Earl Grey martini which is simple, tart and refreshing creation. Gin is infused with earl grey tea leaves, left to sit and then double strained and chilled overnight. It is then vigorously shake this infusion with freshly pressed lemon juice and egg white.
So what else did we have at Ku De Ta? This was one of those days that we spent the almost the whole day at the beach. We started with a lovely breakfast. It was nice and quiet early in the morning. I just loved listening to the waves. Very calming and somewhat addictive.
This was one of the yummiest breakfast ever. Being relaxed may be one of the deciding factors. I ordered the Ricotta hotcakes topped with strawberries, chunks of honeycomb and honeycomb butter with a side of maple syrup and blackcurrent jam. The hotcakes were fluffy and light. I dare say that it tastes better than the ones I had at Bills in Sydney. Opps! So they were so generous with the strawberries and it worked so well with the crunchy yet chewy honeycomb hidden in between layers of the hotcakes. It was just heavenly!
Mistered ordered an eggs benedict full breakfast. It was served with a choice of coffee or tea and a fruit platter. The eggs were perfectly cooked. Very googey and soft and the yolks were just oozing out when he cut into it. It was tasty but just hard to beat the hotcakes that I had. Plus I was not sure if the beans were home made or tinned. Hmmm….
There was an interesting mix of fruits on the platter. Papaya, big grapes, star fruit, passion fruit, pear, pineapple and apple. A very good mix actually. We were definitely feeling very sleepy after such a big breakfast. But there was no time to waste as we hit the waves and had so much fun!
And for our late lunch and we were still feeling our breakfast, we decided that would share the set lunch that is only availiable from Monday to Thursday. We were a little skeptical on how fresh the food was going to be as it was low season and the lunch crowd was quite thin. Our first course was crumbed sardines with very crispy croutons and mushrooms. They sat on finely diced red onions, tomatoes, cucumber and olives and mayonnaise drizzle around the plate. It did have a really pretty presentation and to us, this was the best course. The flavours are very clean and love the different textures on the dish.
The main course was a pan fried trout with tomato sauce with haloumi and fatso salad. The tomato sauce has a heavy touch of star anise. It was an acquired taste. I did not like it initially but it did grow on me. The fish was a disappointment. Totally overcooked and so was very dry. Mister said maybe the fish was not fresh anymore and so they had to cook it so well! The fatso salad was couscous with cucumber, tomato and parsley. Very nice and clean taste. The whole dish did lack a punch. Pretty ordinary.
The presentation of the dessert is beautiful but it tasted very ordinary. It was a chocolate parfait with vanilla whipped cream and raspberry compote. Not memorable at all.
And of course we were back here on our last day in Bali. We were just getting the hang of body boarding and going crazy with the wild waves. I had one of my best rides and I did not care if my body hurt, that I had literally drank sand, that I had the odd tanlines. It was great fun and I loved every minute of it. After the morning surf, we had a big brunch. I ordered the lamb merguz burger. It is lamb pattie with roasted pumpkin, baba ganoush, tabouli and served with lovely crunch thick chips.
And Mister ordered 2 side dishes. The first was a marinated grilled pork ribs. Super tender and juicy and also the chicken quesidillas again. Satisfying last meal before we left Ku De Ta and headed back to our CLIO apartment to pack up.
I miss this place. It had so many great memories for the both of us. Will we come back? I hope so! And I will recommend everyone to do so. Reviews may say that this place is over-rated or there are far better places to hang out. Whatever. I like it. And please had over to my flickr album for more photos
We always have fun when we travel together. It could be backpacking through Europe or forcing our way with the millions of people in China. It had been great fun and we are looking forward to our next adventure.

3 things I love about traveling:
- not having to be at work
- the food
- the shopping
I've loved your Bali posts. I also fell in love with Ku De Ta, I totally agree with your sentiments! I definitely plan to take my sister there when we go to Bali in July, and I hope that the lamb burger is still on the menu
Sitting there with my best friend watching the sun set as we sipped amazing cocktails and felt ourselves relaxing was quite touching, I'm not surprised you shed a tear.
I could watch that video all day. It's a lot better than looking out my window at the 2 feet of snow that hit Boston yesterday. Sigh.
@MaryMoh – Yes. STar fruits! So expensive here as well.
@citronetvanille – I miss the island life. no watch required
@Jessie – All the martinis were yummy
@Drick – Happy to share
@Iron Chef Shellie – Who doesn't! Let's share and buy an island and not working ever
@Conor – July!!! Hmmm…. maybe. Just maybe
@Alison – How cold is it now in Boston?
Wow, so many great food. You really deserve that break most especially from work. I noticed that Mister likes poached eggs a lot.
Three things I love about traveling: food, freedom (of course sans my mom) and unexpected surprises, good ones, I mean.
We all love eggs~ They are the best
And yes freedom. That is why everything tastes better and we are always smiling.
I'm pretty sure I'm jealous, what with all those wonderful meals (the eggs benidict along with the burger stood out in particular) and that gorgeous view to go with it!
I know it's a little late to write a comment now. But after editing and posting my own photos of Bali yesterday, I realize how much I miss Bali. Decided to take a look at your own memories & food review of Bali again. Ahhh*, I could watch that video on repeat! I think Bali could easily be the place I'd like to spend my retirement in the far far away future. Open up a little boutique and a jeroxie cafe/bar?
.-= eLLy*´s last blog .. =-.
Never too late my dear. I was thinking the same thing. Let's discuss our plans when you get back!
