Jazz City Diner, Darlinghurst

“What should I have for dinner tonight? Nothing fancy please.” This was my call out on twitter one Friday night and Jazz City Diner was one of the suggestions. Fried chicken on waffles won over sushi for dinner. This little New Orleans themed diner is opened by Dan McGuirt, ex-chef of Vue De Monde. I  was told that the initial menu contained foam type dishes but it seemed that most people were and are still attracted by burgers and fried chicken.

Mister ordered a soft drink and myself, a beer! How times have changed but this is just a rare occasion. The Jarritos lime soda was really sweet and not my cup of tea. I made the right decision of having a beer. It goes with deep fried foods right?

I wanted to try everything on the menu but can’t go past the fried chicken on  Belgiumwaffles with maple syrup and brown butter. This dish spells American. I can’t believe anyone not liking this. Sweet and savory crunch in one bite. And then followed by a sip of beer. Friday bliss. The only thing that did not work was the blotch of cooked spinach on the side. We all know that this is an unhealthy dish. So why bother? Oh… and please get rid of the little cubes of capsicum.

Mister ordered the Texas chilli cheese burger ($17). It was quite a massive burger that is laden with spicy beef patty, cheese, mayo, pickle and squashed between 2 buns. It has a nice flavour but was difficult to eat because the bottom bun became too floppy to hold. For another $3, it came with a side of onion rings. The batter was light and crispy. I prefer to eat my burger with both hands than knife and fork.

If you are expecting this diner to be a cheap eats, then look elsewhere. $22 for Chicken waffle isn’t exactly cheap. But there are many regular that come back over and over again. I just notice from how the Chef Dan has friendly chats with returning punters. It may be the fried chicken or may be the friendly chef himself? But I shall be back. And this time, we may just fill this little diner with food loving friends. Send me an email if you are interested. There are still spots left.
