It is home alone with Tekkie. Mister is still travelling around in Tasmania till the end of the week so I will need to prepare meals for myself only. There was nothing very much in the refrigerator and I wanted to wait for Mister to be back here before going through all the Tasmanian goodies. When I posted the question of what to cook on twitter, there were many suggestions like veal schnitzel, scallopini, Japanese curry and even instant noodles!
I was going to make veal schnitzel but changed my mind once I got home. I need packed lunch and dinner for one other night so decided to make Japanese veal curry instead. There are some missing ingredients like onions and fresh ginger. I missed out the onions and used ginger powder instead. Please use fresh ginger if you can and also add onions for more flavour.
Ingredients:
Curry
- 500g veal, chopped into small cubes
- 2 carrots, cubed
- 4 small potatoes, cubed
- 2 nice handful of frozen peas
- 11/2tsp of corn flour
- 2tbsp of mirin
- 3 tsp of curry powder
- 11/2tsp of ginger powder (Use grated fresh ginger if you have it)
- 11/2 tsp of chilli powder
- 2tsp of garam masala
- 2 star anise
- 600ml of stock (I used chicken stock)
- Salt & pepper
Roux
- 3tbsp of flour
- 3tsp of butter
I just got back from Hobart the night before. There was hardly anything in my refrigerator. I had some veal from the Flemington farmers market and leftover vegetables. If you have a small onion, please dice it and use it! And not forgetting fresh ginger.
Method:
- Marinate the diced veal with salt, white pepper, ginger powder and corn flour. Heat up the oil and brown the veal pieces
- Add the mirin and 250ml of stock first to deglaze the pan. Add the remaining stock, carrots, potatoes, curry powder, garam masala, chilli powder and star anise. Allow it to simmer for at least 30mins or until veal is tender
- In the meantime, prepare the roux. In a smaller sauce pan, add butter and also it to heat up gently. Then add the flour and stir till it is quite brown. Turn off the heat
- Add the roux to the veal mixture. Stir and the sauce will thicken. Once the sauce is thicken, turn off the heat. Serve hot with rice
It feels good eating at home again even though it is such a simple meal. And I missed pottering in the kitchen. By the way, I picked up this oblong dish in Tasmania for $2.50 and hand carried it back with me. I had a nice trip in Tasmania. Still going through the photos and will be posting about it soon. Will I go back? Hell yeah!

Probably this! It reminds me of being a kid and my obaachan would make it. It’s also the only thing my dad can cook so I ate a lot of it (pork not veal though) and so if I’m on my own it’s a nice comfort food.

I have never tried making Japanese curries before, will have to give some a go. Love the dish you got – perfect for this sort of meal.
As for home alone cooking – I always seem to return to chilli tuna pasta!

Curry…mmmm….I love it any time. Just that and rice is good enough for me. If I'm alone at home, rice, fried eggs and some vegetables is enough.

Ooo…this sounds great! I just made this with chicken meat a couple of days ago. But without the anise, chili powder & garam masala! I'm not adding those because that will remind me of Indian curry! Enjoy!

I love Japanese curry and you still created a great dish even if Mister is not around. Normally, people won't cook a great dish like this one.

What a lovely post. I love chestnuts and I am sad that they are not so common over here in the U.S. We used to have a huge chestnut tree in the backyard back in Korea and every fall, we'd get chestnuts out of the poky shells.
