Do you love cheese and truffle?
Formaggi Ocello is just round the corner from us. Super dangerous and don’t think Mister is aware how much money has been spent in that delicious cheese shop. Shhh…. just let’s hope he never finds out. I am a cheese addict and loving it. The initial thought was to make a breakfast burger for this series. Like the 99 breakfast at Tiffany that I had at Reuben Hills. I bought the chorizo and my legs lead me towards Ocello. I ended up getting Gruyere, brie and a bottle of Truffato (olives, capers and truffles) The lady that was serving me suggested that I had this with brie in the sandwich.
This grilled ham and double cheese sandwich requires intense supervision when it sits under the grill. I had a home made coffee (used the Devondale Barista’s Own), sat on my little stool and watched the grill and my super cheese sandwich.
The sandwich is made from building yummy layers of truffle spread, cheese and ham. The inspiration came from the super cheese sandwich at Gnome. They used 3 different cheese and it is a big hit with many of the locals and food bloggers. The cheese is stringy and sandwich that is too big for one (for me, anyway).
- 2 thick slices of bread
- 1 thick slice of legham
- 1 or 2 tbsp of olives capers truffle spread (optional) – up to you really
- a thick slice of brie
- a slice of Gruyere
- Spread the Truffato onto the first slice of bread. Add the brie on top and grill it under the brie starts melting
- Remove the bread out of the grill and add the ham. Spread more Truffato, layer the Gruyere and place it back under the grill
- Allow the Gruyere to melt, add the bread on the top and grilled until the bread is brown. Please watch and do not burn the bread
Make sure that your eyes do not leave the sandwich under grill. It does not take very long at all. Usually about 30secs to a minute. It is oven dependent. I sat, sip my coffee and watched like a hawk. By the time my sandwich is ready, my coffee is almost gone!
