Richmond and Prahran has Pacific House and South Melbourne has Linx to provide the community with delicious Chinese roasts. Living in the North West, we have Golden Harvest that caters to our needs. We do regular visits to Footscray on the weekends to pick up Chinese/ Asian groceries. And sometimes, we will take away a box of roast duck, crispy pork belly and/or BBQ pork.

I know that this place does orders for roasted suckling pigs. It is usually for a wedding or some sort of celebration. So the roast here is really well known amongst the locals. This a typical Cantonese/Vietnamese restaurant. This means that a small bowl of soup is always served before a meal.

This was the first time that we were here for dinner. Our first preference was the pork belly with taro but we were out of luck. The pork was sold out and so we ended up ordering 2 kinds of roast (again) – roast duck & crispy pork.

Pipa is a Chinese musical instrument. The tofu is suppose to be shaped like one and hence the name of the dish, Pipa tofu. Small shrimps are usually used but this place uses dried shrimp and small diced chinese dried sausage or lup cheong. The tofu was silken soft and fulled flavoured from the subtle starchy oyster sauce.

We were served with a small plate of cut oranges at the end. It is so typical in a  Cantonese restaurant.

We will have to come back here to try the pork belly. If it is sold out at 8pm, it must be very good! And it is always good to have an old skool Cantonese restaurant around for a quick and yummy dinner.

What is the one must have dish in a wedding in your tradition?

The roast duck & crispy pork looks amazing. Roasted suckling pigs for weddings? That kinda wedding I would like to attend. :-)

There’s always roast duck and pork in every restaurant. My brother had some roast duck on his wedding. I always look forward to desserts – mango sago or the peanut butter mochi (Chinese style). :)

I went here recently and wasn’t impressed, but judging from your delicious photos, I think it deserves another go! The Pipa Tofu looks amazing. When I was little, all our family weddings had beef for the boys and chicken for the girls, served up by some outer suburban function centre. Think leathery Beef Wellington, and dried-out chicken breast stuffed with bad Camembert. Thank god Australians are more sophisticated now!

Fantastic, another Chinese restuarant I can bring mum and dad to when they descend for CNY! Since I’m Malaysian Chinese – crispy roasts are a wedding must, though we sometimes have to do chicken or duck because pork isn’t halal and we get Malay guests. Unfortunately sharks fin soup also seems to be a staple at weddings, though I’ve attended a few of late that are eschewing the trend…

Been to Golden Harvest a few times, love the crispy pork, it’s good. Btw, have you been to Master restaurant nearby in Footscray? I reckon the roast duck at Master is better, in fact it’s my favourite place for roast duck.

I like the look of that tofu – and I envy how many great restaurants you and Mister have to choose from!

I do like the look of that tofu, but I’m having trouble picturing how it could make music… :D

I’m considering getting married just for a suckling pig, but I suspect it might be better to just buy myself a suckling pig without the wedding. I’ll let you know what I decide.

I’m about five seconds from making the trek to Chinatown for some roast pig and duck. Sadly they’re not open at 9am yet. Thanks for the cravings!

Thanks for your great recommendations on Twitter! Great atmosphere and absolutely packed on a Tuesday night. The Chinese broccoli and beef szechuan was delicious! I wasn't brave enough to try the duck or crispy pork :p Fried ice cream was a bit seafoody, possible fried in the same oil? But overall, a great experience.
