Dong Ba was my first introduction to Footscray years and years ago by our very good friend Ms W. We never went back since.
With Billy’s recommendation, Mister ordered the bun bo hue. It is also known as spicy beef. I think Billy had a kick from our bad pronunciation. It was seriously good. I could taste the lemongrass and not much chilli. Apparently it is not suppose to be chilli hot? There is so much flavour in the broth. I just wanted to drink the whole bowl and not return it to Mister. And look at the blood cube! Delicious. I must order this the next time.
Stubbornly I decided to order something else. There is nothing wrong wanting to try a different dish. I went for the rice sticks with crab meat. A huge part of me knows that there will be a minimum crab. The clear broth was slightly enhanced with MSG. The crab meat was disintegrated into the broth. I can barely taste it. Actually I was expecting crab sticks!
And Billy ordered the Hainanese chicken rice which I thought was weird. It may just be me. I will never order a hainanese chicken rice in a Vietnamese restaurant. Even though he said it was quite moist but I thought the skin had been “slaughtered” during the cooking process. It was a generous portion though and was given a nod from Billy. Another thing that I didn’t really like is that it is served with tomato rice! The rice is suppose to be cooked with the chicken stock so that it becomes oily but flavourful.
