A new cafe, Cowbell 808 has popped up in Surry Hills. It is located on a rather quiet part of Bourke Street but many have heard wind of it and flocked to check out the new joint. We managed to get a table but was pre warned that there was at least 30 minutes wait for food and maybe a long wait for coffee too. Teething issues that will smoothed itself out in the next few weeks and months.
I do like the retro fit out with seriously old skool tape player and recorder, lego pieces, old vinyls, an old basketball loop and graffiti art on the walls. The tables are cheap laminate but it fits into the whole milkbar concept. Please note that the coffees and food are not milkbar prices.
Beans from Toby Estate. The flat white actually quite well made but of course I am super biased towards Gnome coffee. I want more of those swirls please!
There is no rules that says hotcakes are only for breakfast. It can be eaten anytime of the day and especially one that is laden with bacon goodness. The hotcakes or pancakes is light, fluffy and made more awesome by sandwiching think and creamy mascarpone. It is also dressed with creamy bacon ice cream and drizzled heavily with an espresso syrup. I was hoping for a sweet and savory bacon crunch in the ice cream but the texture was different. Still delightful and please come with an appetite. It was a touch too much for me… yes, you heard right. I am trying to get myself bikini ready for summer.
The burger that Mister ordered was a disappointment. It’s a wagyu burger with a side of onion rings. The bun was stiff and he preferred something soft like brioche. The beef patty was tasteless and the onion rings were soggy. The wagyu burger was pretty average. Not a total disaster but with a price tag of $18, one will expect it to be, at least, good. Just say that the plate is not cleaned up.
Will be back to check out the rest of the menu but not in a hurry. But I am sure that many will make this a destination. It is a cute and quirky cafe. What not to love?
