Coconut house on Elizabeth Street

in cafe

It is always good to find a good Malaysian/ Singaporean cafe that tries to cook dishes that is pretty close to home. I tried the Nasi Lemak last week and I have to say the achar (pickled vegetable) was pretty damn good! So we came back again this week with Wendy to try other dishes.

I tried the cheongfun with yong tau fu pieces and sweet sauce. Overall, it is OK. The selection of the yong tau fu is small. And of course, I will prefer home-made yong tao fu but even back in Singapore and Malaysia, they will be factory packaged. The cheong fun on the other hand was pretty fresh!

Henry ordered the chicken laksa and a teh tarik. The broth had good colour and a nice balance of coconut cream. However, he will prefer to be more spicy! And I will like to have cockles with mine!

Last but not least, Wendy ordered the handmade Ban mian. It is a soup dish with other ingredients like deep fried anchovies, mined pork and vegetables. It definitely hit the right spot. A light soupy dish that is so comforting during winter.

The teh tarik here is OK. Please do not expect the usual kopi tiam teh tarik but it beats Old Town hands down. At least it doesn’t come from a sachet! This place is affordable so do not expect good service or smiling waitresses. Self-service menu from the front, decide what you like to have, order and pay at the counter.

Yes, I will come back again when I am homesick for food back in Singapore. I will recommend the Nasi Lemak and a teh tarik. :)

I have revisited recently and had a rather disappointing experience. Read about it here.

Dan and I were happy to find a good Singaporean/Malay hawker like cafe in the CBD. We were impressed with the laksa, and look forward to going back to try the nasi lemak!

I'm really surprised. I hated the food and teh tarik there so much that I've sworn never to step foot in that place again!

wahh! I don't really like the teh tarik but I thought some of the food was quite good. What did you have?
