Chat Thai at Sydney CBD & Westfield

by jeroxie March 18, 2012

I am a Chat Thai convert. I have written about Chat Thai a couple of years ago when we were up for a visit. Both Mister and I were a little unimpressed. We did not think that it was worth the never ending hype. But now we love Chat Thai and even @mamajeroxie has become [...]

Discovery – Cheap eats in Sydney

by jeroxie October 9, 2011

If you are travelling on a budget in Sydney, living by yourself, a student or just want food cheap, fast and delicious, then these 2 places have your name stamped all over it. It is actually true to say that eating in Sydney costs more than Melbourne. I was up in Sydney for 5 days and it was wise to start watching out spending. The interstate move from Melbourne is going to be crazy expensive. If anyone has any better ideas, feel free to pass them over.

Chin Chin Melbourne, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie July 5, 2011

This is my second visit to Chin Chin. It is the Chin Chin on 125 Flinders Lane that everyone is talking about. It is the new IN place to be seen eating and sipping cocktails in Melbourne CBD. The brains behind Chin Chin is Chris Lucas and the man in the kitchen is Andrew Gimber which will be joined by Ben Cooper from St. Ali very soon.

Goat Shanks Massaman Curry

by jeroxie June 12, 2011

In a recent Australian Masterchef elimination challenge, Kumar and Andrew had to go head to head to fix a terrible version of massaman curry. Andrew left the Masterchef Kitchen that evening on the basis that it tasted less of a massaman curry as it has no peanuts and another reason that I cannot remember. I looked up the Masterchef website for the recipe and decided to give it a shot. I tweaked the spices a little and added the all important peanuts to the recipe.

Thai Culinary, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie April 12, 2011

Words spread fast. Recently, I did write about my disappointment with Coconut House. I received an email from the owner explaining how she had been ill and have employed a manager that had totally messed up the place. She further explained that she will be fixing the staffing issues and hope to bring the place back to it’s old glory. So let’s wait and see if she execute those promises.

Appetizer, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie March 8, 2011

A bunch of us first discovered Appetizer early last year. This place is totally Asian and I know I know, I should have shared this knowledge ages ago but one part of me like to keep it “Asian”. When I enter this Thai bar & restaurant, I get transported back to South-east Asia. It is after all located next to City Gate Apartments. This block of apartments are mostly filled by Asian students and this place does cater to them with its very affordable prices and cheap drop. It’s dining area is mostly open space and so attracts many smokers and drinkers. It is not exactly rowdy but it is very Asian. And that is why a part of me want to keep it the way it is. I come here and I feel comfortable or rather familiar. And now this is out on Gourmet Traveller and also on twitter… this secret is no more so I shall share why I love this place much more than most hatted restaurants in Melbourne.

Cookbook Challenge W21 (Thai) – Northern Fish Curry

by jeroxie April 11, 2010

The weather has definitely turned. I needed to put on my winter coat this morning when I headed to the gym. The other tell tale sign is that I am hungry almost every single hour and all I like to do is to hide under the doona and watch Lifestyle food channel all day.

Many Thai soups and curries are perfect for the cold weather. It warms our tummy and the I love the warming aroma of the herbs that fills the kitchen and the house. I turned to a old Thai cookbook – Thai Cooking by Judy Bastyra & Becky Johnson. I can’t remember where I picked this up but it must have been on sale! I was a little suspicious if the recipe was going to work. It says curry but it seems more like a spicy soup to me. Anyway, I adapted the recipe and added my own take on it.

Khao San Road

by jeroxie February 26, 2010

This week I shall bring you another local that we just stumbled upon. There seems to be new cafes and restaurants that have been springing up in our local in the last couple of years. It may not become the next Brunswick or Smith Street but I have to admit that I never thought I find nice places in my local to eat! But my mind is slowly changing.

Khao San Road may sound familiar to some of you that has travelled and visited Bangkok. It is a famous street in Bangkok that attracts backpackers and budget tourists. I would say that is quite a bohemian type area that also attracts local artists and party people. Having said that this restaurant is not emulating this famous street. Dark wood chairs and tables occupy the space. The usual Buddha artwork hangs on the walls and some of the decorative table lamps have priced tags on them.

Singha Thai Restuarant

by jeroxie January 24, 2010

I was looking at the map of places that I have eaten since I started this blog and it is rather sad that I have not really explored my local at all. We have been in this area for the last 3 years and know so little about the food here. I guess some of the cafes and restaurants do look rather suspicious and even though I said many times not to judge the book by its cover, I find it hard to just walk into a empty place and “check” it out.

Anyway, I thought we should just make a point to start exploring. Singha Thai seems like a good place to start. The place looks old and rundown. The price seems reasonable. And there were only 2 other tables.
