Eating in Surry Hills – Sushi Suma

by jeroxie April 8, 2012

More local eating. Sushi Sumo is recommended by a fellow colleague that lives around the area. It was recommended for a cheap night out and not to impress your date. Sushi Sumo is located on Cleveland Street. This street is dotted with a fair selection of Indian cuisine. I am not a big fan of Indian or Pakistani food but will most likely pick one or two to check out in the next few months. There is one Indian restaurant called Holy Cow! It seemed packed out whereas the rest are only half filled. I will need to chuck on the old research cap and not based on one observation on a Friday night.

Sydney Cheap Eats – Menya Mappen & Menya Oiden, Sydney CBD

by jeroxie January 19, 2012

Sydney has a larger Japanese community. There are so many little Japanese cafes, restaurants and chain ones like Menya. My first Menya encounter was Menya Noodle Bar in Haymarket that serves pretty awesome ramen. I prefer Gumshara but my colleagues are skewed towards Menya. I will go back and have another shot and write about it again.

Izakaya Fujiyama, Surry Hills

by jeroxie December 20, 2011

Living in Surry Hills means that we do not have to travel far for a nice dinner. We decided on Izakaya Fujiyama. It is nicely stocked with imported sake and beer. But it also holds a short selection of wines and cocktails. The space is nice and airy with an outdoor eating. We decided to [...]

Gumshara Ramen, Haymarket

by jeroxie October 1, 2011

Many have come before me and raved about it. It is a very well known fact that ramen in Sydney is definitely far superior than in Melbourne. I have been to Sydney many times and yet never had the chance to hit the infamous Gumshara Ramen. This very popular ramen outlet is located in a food court in Haymarket. This is the first time that Mister and I are taking a lunch break together in Sydney. I am sure the novelty will wear off but for now, I am embracing it. It was about a 5 minutes walk from my office on Kent Street to Haymarket. I was expecting a long queue but was pleasantly surprise that the wait was not too bad.

International Incident Terrine Party – Sushi terrine

by jeroxie June 28, 2011

I have eaten my fair share of terrines but have only made one terrine in my entire cooking life. To be honest, I am not particularly a big pan of terrine. They are pretty look at and some are delicious but I sometimes think that it lacks punchy flavours or just way too rich for my liking. I guess I never had the perfect terrine.

Don Too, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie June 2, 2011

So many have gone before me. So many have sang high praises of Don Too. Many claims that Don Too serves one of the best ramen in Melbourne. Mister and myself will be really hard judges especially after our trip to Vancouver and New York. We had some of the best ramen that we ever tasted in the 2 cities. So how does Don Too ramen stack up against them? Were we doomed to be disappointed?

Hokkaido Chiffon

by jeroxie October 6, 2010

This was one of the weekends where Mister is the superstar in the kitchen. Did I ever mentioned that he can cook and bake? And some of you may remember the times where he “rescued” my dish. After taking some baking lessons from @eatnik (Anna) which she baked a batch of Hokkaido chiffon on my request, I decided that I will like Mister to do the same. Just because I really love chiffon. It is light, fluffy and deliciously awesome! Yet again, I was the spectator that did the occasional whipping and in this case, I made the filling and licked the spatula.

Ichi Ni, St. Kilda

by jeroxie October 5, 2010

Mister has been eyeing to try this Ikazaya joint, Ichi Ni, for awhile. So after work one night and a secret meeting with fellow bloggers (all will be announced soon), both of us decided to head to Ichi Ni for some Japanese goodness. We didn’t think that we needed to book during mid week and Ichi Ni isn’t the most public transport friendly place. However, the place was packed and we were very fortunate to grab the last 2 seats at the counter.

Typical Melbourne. The teapot and cups are all odd coloured an shapes. But the green tea definitely spoke for itself. Strong grassy taste but not offensive. Very refreshing and just a joy to sip throughout the meal.

Matcha Madness – Matcha shortbread cookies

by jeroxie July 31, 2010

I love matcha. Besides making matcha tea, it is not an ingredient that I have worked before. Matcha is one of my favourite ice-cream flavour. I have green tea almost everyday at work. And I still salivate when I think about the piece of matcha cotton soft cheesecake that I had 2 years ago in Singapore. And of course reading all the matcha recipes from Catty’s blog is enough to send me MATCHA MAD!

Meatless Monday #29 – Kimchi gyoza

by jeroxie July 16, 2010

One could never really tire of kimchi. It is one of those little dishes that the more you eat, you more you want to eat it. Last week, Mister made a lot of kimchi and due to its fiery nature; many friends were reluctant to set their tongues and tummies on fire.

This recipe depends on the extent of your chilli tolerance. Please find the recipe for the gyoza dough here. It is so easy. There is a high tolerance for mistakes. Too wet, add more flour. Too dry, slowly add water into the dough. Please remember to work the the dough before making a decision for adding either more flour or water. Your hands are the best tool. I will advise against using any kitchen gadgets. The dough is ready when it feels soft and it is not sticky.

Meatless Mondays #27 – Miso barley risotto with tempeh and tofu

by jeroxie June 30, 2010

Why waste time while waiting for public transport to be on time? I spent it on thinking of recipes and dishes that I wanted to cook or test on the weekends. And sometimes, I spend time daydreaming that I am in South of France, visiting the countryside and not a care in the world. This was one of the dishes that I concocted while I was packed into the train as usual, like a sardine.

Japanese veal curry

by jeroxie April 29, 2010

It is home alone with Tekkie. Mister is still travelling around in Tasmania till the end of the week so I will need to prepare meals for myself only. There was nothing very much in the refrigerator and I wanted to wait for Mister to be back here before going through all the Tasmanian goodies. When I posted the question of what to cook on twitter, there were many suggestions like veal schnitzel, scallopini, Japanese curry and even instant noodles!

I was going to make veal schnitzel but changed my mind once I got home. I need packed lunch and dinner for one other night so decided to make Japanese veal curry instead. There are some missing ingredients like onions and fresh ginger. I missed out the onions and used ginger powder instead. Please use fresh ginger if you can and also add onions for more flavour.

Where is the best ramen in Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie April 28, 2010

Menya was our first stop. It is a very small ramen shop located on the busy footpath corridor area of Melbourne Central. As the place was really tiny, the group was spilt into 2 tables. I didn’t mind too much with the ramen here. @cloudcontrol was not impressed and I believed he gave this place a low score. I had the Menya ramen. I gave it top marks for toppings. I thought it was good value for money at $10.90 and we were given a prawn, a scallop, crab sticks, cuttlefish, an egg and a couple of pieces of chasu.

Beer deluxe presenting Shinobi Japanese Secret Beer Garden

by jeroxie March 19, 2010

For the month of March 2010 and in support of the official Melbourne Food and Wine Festival , Beer DeLuxe, at Federation Square, will showcase Japanese culture, beers and food as part of the Shinobi Japanese Secret Beer Garden. Just in case you are wondering, Shinobi means Ninja in Japanese. Also in support of L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival and promotion of young creative talent, this secret garden is especially designed by Tokyo-born and Melbourne-based graphic designer, Nami Kano and University of Melbourne Master’s of Architecture student, Olivia Fielding.

I was thrilled to receive an invite from Beer Deluxe to the garden and had a taste of some of the Japanese offerings that is served here for a short time only. I had been to Beer Deluxe a couple of times before after work when I used to work in the CBD. They have a big repertoire of beers from around the world and I believe about 8 – 10 different beers on tap. And I was totally surprised how the outdoor area facing Flinders Street has been transformed. It is such a pity that this set up will be taken down early April as it’s a great outdoor area for beer lovers.

Planning – Ramen adventure

by jeroxie March 12, 2010

Hello fellow friends,

In my earlier post about ‘The search of the best tonkotsu ramen in Melbourne’, it did conclude and mentioned that a few Melbourne food bloggers and myself have decided to embark on a one day ramen adventure. After many email exchanges, we have concluded on a rating system and its criteria.

1. Broth
2. Noodle
3. Toppings
