I made a really silly mistake on the way to dinner on Friday. And it costed us a 12hr slow roast lamb. Mister and I both arrived on time for dinner. The place looked particular empty for a Friday night and especially if there was a Family Roast Dinner promotion for the month. We ordered our drinks and looked around the room. No one was having roast? The waitress was also dumbfounded that we mentioned that we pre-ordered our lamb roast. There was no promotion and nor roast!

We have been there on several occassions and it is a nice casual pub that serves good food, beers and even has a decent wine list. The pub is spilt into 3 areas. The front area where it houses the pool table and some high and low tables. The proper dining room area is at the back where usually customers with booking are served. And there is a lovely small courtyard area for those that choose to sit outdoors.

I walk past Panette many times during South Melbourne market weekdays. It always seem packed with breakfast and lunch crowd. So I took the opportunity to visit this place when Mr. S said to catch up for lunch.

I ordered the meatball linguine. It was a mixture of slow cooked veal and pork meatballs with linguine in tomato sugo and topped with thin slices of Parmesan cheese. The meatballs were very juicy and flavourful. It was a very decent plate of pasta. I will give it a benefit of a doubt that the pasta is freshly made or else it means that it is very over cooked!By the way, I like how the sugo coats the pasta. Great consistency.

I had a conversation with a meat lover just this weekend and was asked why the hell do I want to do this meatless day once a week. Both of us will usually eat quite a fair bit over the weekend and a meatless day is always welcomed. I try to make it the healthier option. And the other reason is to learn about flavour. It isn't easy just whipping up a vegetarian meal without the use of animals fats. And it is nonsense to think that vegetarian food is boring and tasteless. In actual fact, they are quite the opposite when done properly and well.

Many times, I will just take the meat out of the recipe but good and delicious vegetarian does require more thinking and more flavour combinations. So this week, I thought I had to try a little harder. I bought fresh organic tempeh from the farmers market and had in my mind to make use of bold spices to kick some life into this piece of tempeh.

I had so many ideas but being a poor technician, I could not figure out a way to execute it. Yet. There was beer or stout pies that I wanted to make. I thought of the humble Shepard pie with potato and rosemary pizza topping. Fruit pies with cheese toppings. Upside down pies. Too many to name them all scribbled in my little black moleskin and hopefully be able to make them all one day. Oh yes, there was the bone marrow pie! I must make that soon. Even thinking about it makes me salivated.

I made this awhile ago to kick start the healthy challenge with Tekkie. It has been going well. But as the weather gets colder, it is getting harder and have changed the routine from mornings to evenings instead. I hope he has lost some weight and I definitely feel better and enjoying my RPM classes a lot more. There is a lot more fruits in our diet. We are still trying to find the right balance in our lives. Too much temptations and distractions!

It seems that most people that I know on twitter have been raving about Miss Jackson. It had been one of the little cafes that I have been keened to try and to understand what makes this place so special. I knew from reading tweets that Miss Jackson is dog friendly as well. So I thought it would a great idea to head over after St. Kilda Farmers.

We took the table next to a dog bowl outside the courtyard. It was quite a lovely day to it outside and soak in some early autumn sun. But with Tekkie in a snappy mood, it proved to be a bad idea. He was snapping at almost everyone that walked past. He was especially bad with the girl that was serving us. Initially, we thought it might be her striking blue shoes but she took it off and he still went for her. Poor chick! I think she was quite upset about it. And I was embarrassed.

The 2010 March Daring Cooks challenge was hosted by Eleanor of MelbournefoodGeek and Jess of Jessthebaker. They chose to challenge Daring Cooks to make risotto. The various components of their challenge recipe are based on input from the Australian Masterchef cookbook and the cookbook Moorish by Greg Malouf.

I wished I had a little more time for this challenge as risotto is one of my favourite comfort food in winter. It has been such a jam packed period and with parents-in-law coming over for a visit, this is what I can offer and I hope it is not too shabby!

I was going through the photos the other day and realised that I have taken many food and coffee shots of St. Ali but never blogged since the one I did in August last year - name of post. It deserves a part 2 and even 3. I tend to visit it when I have a long morning at work or when I just feel like chilling out by myself and away from work. It isn't exactly the quietest cafe in South Melbourne. It is always buzzing with people, the slayer hard at work, beans roasting in the far end and sipping of coffee and kling klang of cutlery.

What a feast! My need-to-lose-weight-diet was definitely thrown out of the window that evening. I could not help myself. The spread was fantastic and to top it all, great company. So many thanks to Nuffnang and Collins Kitchen for organising this foodbloggers event. More I say!
The executive chef, Jason Camillo took us around the open kitchen and introduce us to its 5 different stations - sushi & crustacean, deli counter, wok, grill & wood fire oven and of course, patisserie. It is all about the food. Most of the produce here is sourced locally and menus are changed once every 6 months.
