The Great Australian Pavlova Blog Hop Event – Pandan Pavlova with lychees, kiwi and coconut cream

by jeroxie November 27, 2011

I did leave it to the very last minute and still wondering if I really want to participate. Procrastination again. I will write more about this in another post. But after much pondering and waking up early on Sunday, I decided why the heck not. So I drag myself out of bed, headed to the supermarket and got myself some castor sugar and coconut cream.

White cupcake with vanilla frosting

by jeroxie December 5, 2010

Christmas is just around the corner. There are so many social engagements and just not enough time to cook or rather be home. Many evenings after work is catching up with friends or to another Christmas party. I am not complaining where there is free alcohol but I do miss the kitchen and writing recipes. So you will be expecting more social and eating out posts than recipe posts.

Chocolate cheesepots with black cherries compote

by jeroxie May 28, 2010

I am sure many Australians are aware who Donna Hay is. I have never really been a big fan of Donna Hay but in her recent 50th Anniversary edition, I could not help myself but to bake the chocolate cake that was on the cover. Of course, mine did not look anywhere like hers. So I said yes when Mardi of Eat.Live.Write.Travel asked me to participate in a Hay Hay it’s Donna Day event (HHDD) that was initiated by Chez Us, I had to say yes and hoping to redeem myself.

International Dumplings Incident Party – Tang Yuan

by jeroxie May 12, 2010

Masterchef Australia has began and in its first challenge, the contestants were told to create something from their childhood memories. We were away in Hobart and so I missed out on that series but I heard that almost everyone had tears! I guess that is the part of being on reality TV. They need tears and stories to hit top ratings. I am sure they succeeded. Even though many will think that contestants should not cry on TV but if it is something touching as childhood memories, then I am sure tears will flow irregardless. It is just that TV makes use of the opportunity to capture it as this is what most audience are after. They love the tears and it is something to bitch about.

Arty Cupcakes by Celeste from Travelling in Mary Janes

by jeroxie May 9, 2010

Celeste and I met at the first Nuffnang end of the year party last year. It is so easy to pick out a fellow Singaporean with the undeniable Singlish! I knew that she is really clever with her hands. She made some really cute cupcake and meringue earrings, she can knit, she can sew. She is able to do all those craft stuff that I can only dream of. And then I found out that she loves food (typical Singaporean, yah) and she loves to cook! YAY!

Cookbook Challenge w15 (Muffins) – What muffin are you?

by jeroxie March 3, 2010

Baking is not one of my forte. And even when I do follow a recipe exactly, the end product is usually still not up to scratch. So this week, I thought I will stick to a no fuss muffin recipe. I found a berry muffin recipe in Women’s Weekly, Old fashioned Favourites. It looked farily simple and with very little ingredients and only 3 steps!. Sounds like a fool proof recipe.

And as always, I decided to change the recipe. A few days before muffin making day, I posted a random question on my facebook fan page asking Mars or Snickers. Most preferred Snickers and I do too. The caramel in Mars makes it heavier and way too sweet for my palate. I had a couple of 18g Snicker and Mars bar so I would use this instead of berries in the muffin recipe.

Cashew nut cookie

by jeroxie February 12, 2010

It was such a lovely sunny day. We really wanted to be outside enjoying the sun but alas Chinese New Year was in a week and a lot more baking needs to be done. I really wanted to have more festive vibes this year. Not being back to Asia for Chinese New Year for more than a decade means those festive celebrations is becoming a distant memories.

After baking a big batch of pineapple tarts the previous day, we opted for something easier and faster. It was Sunday and there was heaps to do. I was slogging in the kitchen making bacon jam and prepping the flour for baking kuih bangkit. Mister found this cookie recipe in the Nonya book and it is his one of his favourite festive goodies. So he jumped in and got his hands dirty. I have admit he is a much better in baking than me. I really suck.

Strawberry granita

by jeroxie January 18, 2010

There are so many ideas and recipes from the cookbooks but I have opted for this simple strawberry granita from River Cafe Cookbook Easy by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers. It was totally inspired by the heatwave that we were experiencing in Melbourne. After making the candy in 43.5C heat, this was the perfect cool down recipe.

Old fashioned honey candy

by jeroxie January 12, 2010

The first thing that popped into my mind when I thought about this week’s challenge was ice cream, cakes and cookies. I flipped though my cookbooks and nothing really caught my eye until I found this old fashioned honey candy recipe from Dori Sanders Country Cooking. It was perfect for this challenge.

This cookbook may not interest many people as there are no pretty pictures at all but instead it is filled with delicious country farm recipes and stories. It has many interesting recipes like pickled pig lips and corncob jelly. The methods used are very old fashioned but has very solid cooking foundations. The ingredients used are kept simple but it hits home with big flavours.

Presenting Rochelle & her Coffee Granita with Chocolate and Vanilla pudding

by jeroxie November 13, 2009

Since joining foodbuzz, I have met and grew to know more food bloggers from everywhere. America, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam, Canada and the list goes on. My third guest blogger, Rochelle of Acquired Taste, is currently living in Canada with her hubby and son. I am not sure why but I was really drawn to her style of blogging and to her as a person. She is such a genuine person, easy going and a great mum and wife. These qualities really shows in the way she writes about her food and family. I just love reading her stories.

Chocolate heaven – Monsieur Truffe

by jeroxie October 27, 2009

Mister (Th0i3) was not fully satisfied from our lunch at Min Lokal and suggested that we checked out Monsieur truffee on Smith Street. Can I do it? A chocolate indulgence straight after lunch? I tried to convince myself that I would have just one hot chocolate.

As many cafes around here, the interior is furnished with odd pieces of furniture, decoratives and beaded curtains. And I do adore the paper origami chairs. They had little plates of tasting chocolate bits and I tried them all. They were so good! You should be there to see the big grin on my face. Heavenly!

Getting chunky with Ben & Jerry’s

by jeroxie October 26, 2009

I received the cool pack from Ben & Jerry’s and it was quite funny how my colleagues reacted to it. I think I was the most popular person that day. And of course, I had to guard the communal freezer to make sure the ice cream tubs are still sealed and no one had stick their hands into the cookie jar ;)

The Ben & Jerry’s “Rolling Cone’ Kombi is currently roaming Melbourne and giving away free ice cream. Follow it on twitter to find out where the next location is. But you have to hurry because they are leaving Melbourne after the 27th of October and heading back to Sydney.

Salmon with wild rocket salad & Kaya toast

by jeroxie October 20, 2009

I bought some wild rocket from Gaswork farmers market on Saturday. They look quite different from the rocket that we are used to. The darker green leaves are narrow and tasted much more peppery. I love the little yellow flowers sticking out from the bunch. It reminded me that Spring is here even though the morning was cold and wet. I bought a bunch and had in mind to get some fresh salmon this Sunday lunch.

Bee Koh – A simple sweet Nyonya dessert

by jeroxie September 24, 2009

Flipping through the Nyonya recipe book, I realised that the Nyonyas & Peranakans have very sweet tooth. The most common ingredients used are sugar, glutinous rice, coconut milk and pandan or banana leaves.

This is one of the many dessert recipes that I will try making. It is a simple glutinous rice pudding and I am sure it will satisfy anyone who loves the big sugar hit. You will be able to find the glutinous rice and pandan leaves in almost any Asian grocery shops. Just note that it is hard to find fresh pandan leaves here so they will be stored in the freezer. I made the mistake of not checking when I was in Footscray. Mister drove me all the way to Richmond and then realisation hit me. Duh~~~

Mochi with peanut butter filling

by jeroxie September 10, 2009

The mochi as we know it are the ones that are usually stuffed with sweet fillings such as red bean paste. Mochi originates from Japan but has been a popular dessert or snack in other parts of Asia, predominately Taiwan, Hongkong and Singapore.
