Yim Yam

by jeroxie November 30, 2009

Yim Yam was discovered by Mister about a month ago. He was quite excited to try it as Matt Preston has named the crispy rice salad as one of the 5 dishes that a person should try in Melbourne. That is a big call and I was equally curious to try it out as well.

Pacific Seafood BBQ House

by jeroxie November 22, 2009

We arrived back in Melbourne early Sunday morning. We headed home to have a look at the state of our renovations. This was a picture of what it looked like on Sunday. But since then, the walls are up and the fittings will be going in soon. We are really excited about this whole transformation. We have still been living like students ever since we finished school and it is time to move on and be all grown up now.
Pacific Seafood BBQ House is one of those Chinese restaurants that we go back from time to time. It is our usual haunt for crispy pork, BBQ pork and roast duck. The other place that does it really well is Linx (South Melbourne market). It has been awhile since we have eaten other dishes here so we decided to dine in.

Warung Bale Bali

by jeroxie November 22, 2009

The most thing that I discovered in Bali and as far as the places that I have tried is that there is no MSG in the food. Why do they need to? The beautiful and aromatic spices gives the dishes here a big lift in flavour. So naturally, I was curious about the Chinese food and if there any MSG is used in its dishes.

As I have mentioned in my previous posts, we have done very little planning for this trip. I was very thankful that there was free Wifi in the room in which I did some research to find the nearest place around to have dinner. This Balinese/Chinese restaurant, Bale Bali, kept coming up in many forums so we decided why not give it a try since it was quite close to our apartment.

Babi Guling from Ibu Oka

by jeroxie November 18, 2009

Ubud is located in the middle of Bali. There are no beaches or mr macho walking around topless and hands swinging by his hand. Instead this town is surrounded by rain forests, rice padi fields and terraces, little art communities, temples, rivers and villages. The lifestyle here is more boho, lesser noise pollution from honking traffic and fresher air from lack of continous construction. So this is a preferred place to visit in Bali if you like the more cultured lifestyle.

Lau’s kitchen and many fond memories

by jeroxie November 12, 2009

I have many fond memories of this place. First, Michael has been a long time friend. We used to party together and he has been a really nice buddy even though he does not have time to hang out much because of the restaurant. Secondly, I had a short working stint at Lau’s. Despite my lack of hospitality experience, he and his family gave me a chance. It was my second job and only worked on Fridays and sometimes Sundays.

MY Restaurant

by jeroxie November 5, 2009

It is beyond a doubt that I love my Mamak. When I found and read about MY from @stickifingers, I knew I had to make a trip down. It did take me awhile as I was distracted with food within my proximity but Mister and I finally drove ourselves across the river last Friday. Surprise surprise. Friday night and no binge drinking. No getting home early Saturday morning. It was a good break from the usual madness.

Is Laksa King still the King?

by jeroxie November 3, 2009

Laksa King has been around for ages. I used to visit this place when I was at Uni with my fellow Singaporean or Malaysian friends. This was the place to go if we wanted to get our Laksa fix. After more than a decade, the furnishings of this place remains the same. The old laminated wooden tables are still around. There are still queues on most nights. And this place still only accepts cash only!

Dainty Sichuan – Did I end up with fat lips?

by jeroxie October 22, 2009

There has always been talk about Dainty and how good and spicy it is. Ex-colleagues used to brag about the mountain of chillies they consumed and I always missed out on joining them because of meetings or prior lunch dates. Dainty Sichuan used to be situated in the city on Corrs Lane. It is also home to one of my favourite Japanese hideout. And they decided one day to pack up and move to South Yarra. I am girl from the North and so I didn’t bother to venture out to the South. And from my previous posts, you understand my hatred for traffic From South to North.

Are you peko peko?

by jeroxie October 9, 2009

Mister finally finished his exams. It isn’t easy continuing to study and to work at the same time ever since he left University. It takes a lot of dedication and focus. It is a admirable quality. I know how hard it is. I did a 10 week course earlier this year and I was so exhausted by the end of it. Worth it but really hard work and a few sleepless nights.

Peko Peko is just a stone throw away fromMister’s workplace so I decided to walk over and have a nice simple dinner together. This little funky and cute restaurant is located amongst both offices and residential buildings. Most of the lunch punters are office workers in the area and according to Mister, it is so pack and hard to get a table. Plus, food usually takes a while to be served. So he advised to have an early 11.30am lunch or a a late 3pm lunch. Dinner crowd seems reasonable and we got a table quite easily so if you do want to try this place, come in the evening instead of fighting with the lunch crowd.

Yum Cha at Golden Dragon Palace

by jeroxie October 8, 2009

This is the first time that I am travelling for yum cha. There are so many options where I am that I never found the need to go too far. @_plasmo_ or Miss V and I have known each other ages ago but we lost contact as we went on doing our own thing. It was great when we found each other on twitter! So when the invite for a Sunday yumcha with her and some friends, I had to say YES. I think it must have been 5 years since we last met? GOSH…time flies when one starts working.

We had an early booking of 11.30am. Mister and I got there 3 mins early and the doors were still closed and people were queuing outside. I hope that all these people have booking. From what I have read, this place is really packed over the weekend for their yumcha sessions. Most of the punters here are asian families. The interior had an old dated grandeur about it. Some of the chairs were big & heavy and it made getting in and out from the chair quite difficult.

Horoki

by jeroxie October 6, 2009

I am a big fan of Horoki. To me and many of my friends, Horiki never seem to fail us. Despite its name and a Japanese owner, this isn’t exactly the usual Japanese joint. Ingredients like olive oil, parmigiano reggiano, light soya sauce & cappers are used in some its dishes. This restaurant is a like a melting pot of cultural tastes. So very Melbourne. So very Australian.

Viém Cafe in Richmond

by jeroxie September 29, 2009

After freezing our toes and fingers at Slowfood farmers market in Abbortsford, we headed to Richmond in search for some yummy food and to get some asian ingredients for chai tao kueh (fried carrot cake) and Sunday’s congee. Not sure what the reason was but I wasn’t too keen on the usual Pho. We drove past Vien cafe and remembered that @stickfingers mentioned something about this awhile ago.

It was still quite early and I reckon we were their first customers of the day. The menu was extensive. And I noticed they have steamboats here. Baby Goat Steamboat ($45), Tom Yum with Seafood ($50) & Steamboat Silver Pearch in Sweet & Sour Soup ($50). It was more than just the usual Vietnamese Pho and broken rice dishes, there were stir-fry dishes, Asian hawker street food, herbal soups, entrees and different types of cold sweet drinks.

Yemeni – The new kid on the block

by jeroxie September 27, 2009

We knew of this place before the raving review from Matt Preston. It is almost a stone throw away from us. I was curious but I had doubts. So what stopped me?

Most of us are quick to judge on first impressions. It is a habit that is hard to break. We will walk past Yemeni (124 Union Road, Ascot Vale) on countless occasions when we walk the dog. I never fail to look in. Hmm… front bit looks empty. A computer is plonked on the left hand side of the dining area. Very simple furnishings. I would wondered if there were any punters in the back. And I will walk away. So what finally made me decide to try Yemeni?

Serving Singaporean hawker food since 1990s – Old Raffles Place

by jeroxie September 18, 2009

Raffles Place is another old time favourite places to eat while we were living in Collingwood/Brunswick. It looks a little old and rundown but strangely enough, it has an old skool Singaporean charm. The restaurant is divided into 2 parts, the kitchen & the dining area. The walls are painted pink and is lined with old colonial photos of Singapore and write ups from Elizabeth Chow.

Pancake Dessert House

by jeroxie September 13, 2009

Back in the days when I was a poor Uni student, Pancake Dessert House was my favourite and most visited eating place. It was only a couple of years ago that this originally 1 shop lot space eating house became 2 to accommodate the ever growing queue of mostly Asian students waiting to get a quick bite.
