China Red, Melbourne CBD

by jeroxie September 14, 2010

I get really excited whenever there is a new Chinese restaurant. I can’t recall why I was in the city but I did happen to walk past China Red on its opening week. So excited that I immediately sms’ed a friend to tell her all about it. The front set up is very similar to Hutong – Cooks pulling noodles or crimping dumplings in a large aquarium like window.

Bokchoy Tang, Federation Square

by jeroxie June 27, 2010

I never thought highly of any restaurants in Federation Square except for Taxi dining. They are all a little more pricey, catered for the tourists and food is usually underwhelming. That is my personal opinion of course. But since Mister wanted to try the yumcha at Bokchoy Tang, I did not resist. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and we deserve to relax and have lunch in a nice place.

The Provincial Hotel, Fitzroy

by jeroxie June 23, 2010

I made a really silly mistake on the way to dinner on Friday. And it costed us a 12hr slow roast lamb. Mister and I both arrived on time for dinner. The place looked particular empty for a Friday night and especially if there was a Family Roast Dinner promotion for the month. We ordered our drinks and looked around the room. No one was having roast? The waitress was also dumbfounded that we mentioned that we pre-ordered our lamb roast. There was no promotion and nor roast!

Sosta Cucina, North Melbourne

by jeroxie May 21, 2010

I overheard on twitter that this little Italian restaurant, Sosta Cucina, serves up some awesome food. It was also featured in an article called “Australian chef’s favourite Italian dishes” in Gourmet Traveller. I am a big fan of the Italian cuisine. In many ways, I feel that it has some similar philosophy as the Chinese cooking and culture. I feel a nice connection. What do you think? I mean, we both love our noodles or pasta as the Italians call it.

Anyway, Mister and I have not been on a date for awhile so we I decided that we should go on one. This means that I get to dress up a little and took this opportunity to wear my deep red boots for the very first time. Don’t get the wrong idea! It is a tall boots with furry lining. So comfortable. Just perfect for cold winter nights and with a little heel, it does make me feel quite special.

My delicious Chinese New Year 2010

by jeroxie March 4, 2010

I need to take a break from all the feasting after this hectic 2 weeks of eating and drinking. It all started a couple of weeks before Chinese New Year where we spent my weekends making pineapple tarts, cashew nut cookies and kuih bangkit. And I made heart-shaped ones because the first day of Chinese New Year falls on Valentine’s Day as well. So more love around for everyone!
A small group of us decided to celebrate both eve and first day of Chinese New Year together. And our place were opened to them. On the eve, we opted to have steamboat. As usual, I volunteered to shop and make 2 types of broth for the evening. The night before was the 30th birthday of 2 friends. Mister and I were shopping totally hungover. We were not a pretty sight. But the party must go on and so we dragged our sorry self to the markets.

Charcoal Lane, Fitzroy

by jeroxie February 5, 2010

I first visited Charcoal Lane in September last year. This white building used to be home of Victorian Aboriginal Health Service (VAHS). I have shady memories of walking past a prominent black, yellow and red coloured building almost everyday to and from Uni. And now it has become this white and somewhat majestic building. From the outside, one would never think that this is a restaurant. It will be good if there are big glass windows or glass doors to peer into this elegant looking restaurant.

A day in Mornington Peninsula

by jeroxie January 19, 2010

I can’t remember the last time Mister and I did a day trip together. And I did not know where to start. So as usual, I turned to twittverse in the beginning of the week to ask for suggestions of wineries and I had an over-whelming response. So thanks to everyone for the suggestions. So I made a little ‘tag-cloud’ to illustrate the responses that I received from twittverse.

Hutong dumplings bar

by jeroxie January 5, 2010

I have always been a fan of Hutong in the city. The service is pretty bad but who cares when the food is good. The xiao long baos are commendable. The mince pork string beans and the szechuan pepper prawns are my personal favourites. But it seems the reviews of the new Hutong in Prahran have been mixed.

The Hutong dumpling bar is part of the Cullen hotel. A nice little bar and outdoor area forms the back of the restaurant. The dining area in the front looks bright and spacious and it has 2 private rooms. With its nicer furnishings, my expectations of the food were definitely higher.

Chun Po

by jeroxie December 15, 2009

Being away from family means that we miss the big family gatherings and dinners. With only 2 of us here and our families are far away from us, we are always up for a big Chinese dinner together. I cannot remember how the twitter conversation started but I believed someone mentioned pork hock and Chun Po came up and somewhat made a decision to catch up for dinner. Bizzare but I do love these adhoc but spontaneous decisions.

ICI Cafe

by jeroxie December 11, 2009

Renovation is almost done. It is just the bathroom rails and replacing the window in the dining area. We have moved back and is living quite shabbily but at least all 3 of us are home. Nothing beats home! Home Sweet Home.
This little bohemian style cafe is tucked away on Napier Street. They serve organic rainforest alliance coffee and support local produce. This explains why the prices here are a little pricey for the food that they serve. I have to say the coffee here is pretty good. Perfect temperature and a lovely deep aroma and flavour. I will be glad to come back just to have a nice latte, sit in one of the little tables and read the papers. It is such a ‘lazy’ place to hang out.

Plume at Highpoint

by jeroxie December 10, 2009

We did a yum cha spree a couple of months ago and so Mister and I decided to stay away from it for awhile. And now the craving is back. Since we were in the area shopping for paint and brushes, we decided to pop into Plume for a quick yum cha. This place is always packed every weekend. We never had to book because we either get here about 11am in the morning or after 2pm. And it has always been easy to get a table for two. The wait is usually not too long.

3 chillies challenge at Dainty

by jeroxie December 5, 2009

Every now and then, we like to set ourselves challenges which may cause us some pains. After our last outing at Dainty, we did disappoint ourselves by not going all the way and trying any 3 chillies dishes. Dainty Sichuan is famous for its super spicy hotpots and dishes covered in more chillies than meat. So we decided as a group that we shall have a “3 chillies challenge” at the Dainty.

Wabi Sabi and a chocolate croissant

by jeroxie December 4, 2009

We are beginning to love Collingwood all over again. Having lived here for 4 years before, this place has changed but hasn’t? It is still gritty and somewhat ugly but it has always been full of character. But over the years, more cafes and littl restaurants have sprung up along this street. More yuppies have moved in and the face of Collingwood is changing.

Mister suggested that we headed to Collingwood for lunch as he wanted to try Goshen (Korean) and have some bibimbap. But alas, the place is closed for lunch. We went past Wabi Sabi when we visited Monsieur Truffe awhile back. This place has been around for 5 years and I am ashame to say that this is our first visit.

Yim Yam

by jeroxie November 30, 2009

Yim Yam was discovered by Mister about a month ago. He was quite excited to try it as Matt Preston has named the crispy rice salad as one of the 5 dishes that a person should try in Melbourne. That is a big call and I was equally curious to try it out as well.
