Woke up early to a lovely Sunday morning. And we decided to take a drive down to Birdman (238 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy) for breakfast. It was a nice drive with hardly anyone on the streets. Party people must still be in bed!
The place was half full when we got there. Plonked ourselves on the table at the end, order 2 lattes and looked at the menu. It had a pretty impressive breakfast menu. There was something catered to almost everyone. From the simple sourdough toast with a choice of Birdman jam to grilled kippers with fried potato & horseradish.
The lattes arrived. After a nice long sip, we ordered our breakfast. I had to choose 1 from 4 different combinations to go with the baked eggs. I decided to go with sujok (spicy moroccan sausage) and tomato sugo (sauce). I could not wait to dunk the toast into the baked eggs. The sauce by itself was quite tart but it balances out when eaten with toast, egg and the sujok.
Henry ordered the black pudding with braised tomato, potato hash & fried egg. This is comfort breakfast. The blackpudding was delicious! Nicely spiced, rich and the tang from the tomato chutney makes a good combination. The potato hash was light and tasty. However, I felt that this dish is a little too heavy for breakfast as the portion was quite large. Will suit better as a brunch order imo.
This place is not catered for kids. A stroller will fit into the narrow dining area. No baby chairs available either.
Birdman isn’t all about breakfast. Brunch, lunch & dinner. They do it all. 2 fixed menus are availiable:
- Tweetie@$35 per head. It consists of 6 dishes from the main menu
- Big Bird@$45 per head. A pretty good deal that comes with 6 dishes from the main menu, 2 from the specials board and a dessert sharing plate!
And not forgetting an impressive wine list!
I will come back for dinner. And for breakfast again…. maybe I will try the Welsh Rarebit then.
*** The place was packed by the time we paid the bill and left. Serving staff were great.
