Many say that Newtown is the Melbournian part of Sydney. Many say that it is just like Collingwood that stretches for 9.1km. In my opinion, the main road of Newtown which is King Street is nothing like Collingwood. However, the side streets of Newtown and Darlington do have a sense of Melbourne that I love and miss dearly. There are little characteristics like small corner cafes decked out in old and adhoc pieces of furniture and people wheeling or carrying their baskets to Eveleigh farmers market at Carriage Works. But once you enter Carriage Works, there is a realisation that this is Sydney and not Melbourne. Well, this farmers market is dog friendly and no more muddy paws from Tekkie when it rains
Both @eatnik & @avidurchin drove from Canberra the night before. We only had a couple of drinks the night before so we all woke up at a decent time. First stop was coffee and pastry at Black Star Pastry. It seems that it is the shiny star in Newtown. Even Melbournians that travel here make this pastry shop as one of the pit stop. The Black Star Pastry is a really tiny shop front. There are a few stools and tables outside but if you really want to grab a seat, then make sure you beat the weekend crowd by getting there early. If not, you will be hanging on to a plate of pastries in one hand, coffee in another with no free hands to eat! And of course, there is the usual queue
I had to try the Strawberry Watermelon cake with Rose cream. The sponge itself was really light and fluffy. The cream was light and well whipped with a nice floral hint of rose. I love the overall layering, texture and freshness of the cake. It worked really well together as a whole. Mister had the custard flan. It reminded me of the Chinese custard tart. I like the flavour but Mister thought the pastry was a little too thick. But most likely it is thick to hold the custard in. It is about 3inches in diameter.
Both @eatnik and @avidurchin had some sort of Almond tart with rum, orange and chocolate? I have no other description for you. Just a photo. We will head back again to have more pastries.
I like this place and its pastries. But what should I try next? How about the Orange cake with Persian Fig? Does that sound good or not?
Opps! By the way, there was a celebrity chef sighting at the Eveleigh farmers market. Kylie Kwong was on site and cooking! It is a regular Saturday thing as Billy Kwong has a stall at the Eveleigh that sells ‘tapas’ type like Asian style omelette with fresh herbs.
