Kitchen by Mike, Rosebery

by jeroxie February 21, 2012

I can’t recall where I first heard of Kitchen by Mike. But if I am to make a wild guess, it will have to be twitter. It is usually my source of where to go and eat and play. It has relevance and I trust the twerps in giving me the right suggestions. What about you? What and where is your source of information? Anyway, Kitchen by Mike is in Rosebery which is about 10 minutes drive. We got out our trusted GPS and away we went. We were unsure when the GPS said “You have arrived at your destination.” Really? So secluded? Where is this place? Is this really 85, Dunning Avenue?

Cafe Sopra, Waterloo Street

by jeroxie February 16, 2012

This week I am heading out of Surry Hills comfort and into a closeby suburb, Waterloo. It is approximately twenty minutes walk from our place and it is interesting to note the difference in changes from one suburb to another and then another. We move from hipster land to something rough and then to something more new? Waterloo has lot more apartments and new developments. Dank Street itself seems pretty hip as well and is dotted with few nice cafes and bakeries. However, I am keen to check out St. Jude in Redfern next. Have you been?

Banana cake with caramel sauce

by jeroxie February 12, 2012

I baked a banana cake. It isn’t another banana cake recipe. This is THE banana cake recipe. There was an intention to share this cake with my colleagues but oops, Mister and I finish the whole cake. I know how ‘bad’ this cake is but I could not help myself! It was just irresistible.

Jazz City Diner, Darlinghurst

by jeroxie February 9, 2012

“What should I have for dinner tonight? Nothing fancy please.” This was my call out on twitter one Friday night and Jazz City Diner was one of the suggestions. Fried chicken on waffles won over sushi for dinner. This little New Orleans themed diner is opened by Dan McGuirt, ex-chef of Vue De Monde. I was told that the initial menu contained foam type dishes but it seemed that most people were and are still attracted by burgers and fried chicken.

Cooking on the Bodum bistro tabletop grill

by jeroxie February 5, 2012

When I first moved from Melbourne to Sydney, my first Sunday morning was spent at Woollahra Festival. I scored tickets to Brave New Chefs II from Mish. It has been awhile now but it was an event where 3 relatively young chefs presented and demonstrated a dish each. The 3 dishes were stunning and flavoursome in their own right. After the hour long event, Mister and I headed to the main festival area. The area was alive with kids and activities.

Reuben Hills, Surry Hills

by jeroxie February 1, 2012

Another week and another cafe in Surry Hills. This time it’s Reuben Hills on Albion Street. The way this cafe is fitted out is so Melbourne-like. It has a long and narrow industrial looking space that opens up at the back. A big share table sits in the middle of the back bit and low [...]

Snapshot of so much eating in Singapore

by jeroxie January 29, 2012

I will be kidding myself if I say that I will report and blog about every single place that I ate in the last trip to Singapore. Too much eating and in that sweltering heat, too much walking. Therefore, no weight was gained but a lot of pleasure was gained. For my benefit and benefit [...]

A date with Kate Gibbs and Kraft Philadelphia

by jeroxie January 26, 2012

I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email asking if I was interested in spending Saturday morning learning food styling/photography session with Philly ambassador, Kate Gibbs. I use a fair bit of Philadelphia products in my cooking and follow the blog, The Kitchen Inc. So absolutely!

The Book Kitchen, Gnome and Bruschetteria 102, Surry Hills

by jeroxie January 25, 2012

Mister and I visited Book Kitchen on Bourke Street late last year. It is just located opposite Bourke Street Bakery and usually just as packed with the locals during the weekend. There are cookbooks filled in big book shelves and even if you are a lone, you will be entertained by the surrounding books. The coffee is decent and not something that I will come back purposely for.

Sydney Cheap Eats – Menya Mappen & Menya Oiden, Sydney CBD

by jeroxie January 19, 2012

Sydney has a larger Japanese community. There are so many little Japanese cafes, restaurants and chain ones like Menya. My first Menya encounter was Menya Noodle Bar in Haymarket that serves pretty awesome ramen. I prefer Gumshara but my colleagues are skewed towards Menya. I will go back and have another shot and write about it again.

Pineapple tarts

by jeroxie January 17, 2012

Pineapple is translated as ‘Ong Lai’ in Hokkien. Direct translation means prosperity come. And what colour is the flesh of the pineapple? It’s yellow which is a close colour to gold especially once the pineapple jam is cooked. Gold means wealth and prosperity as well. For me, it just starts damn bloody good. Pineapple tarts can be eaten in one mouthful. And once a year, I indulge to having as many as I can!
