International Incident Egg Party – Tea Eggs

I have struggled this month. I thought eggs was suppose to be fun! And I love eggs. Why am I finding it so difficult? Alas I left it too late and still without an inspiring idea. And so this is my last resort. Tea eggs are simple, pretty and delicious. It has been so long since I had any so what better way to bring it back in fashion. Plus, I have everything in my pantry. Well, that was what I thought.

Before I go on with my rant. Let me wish the birthday girls. HAPPY BIRTHDAY and big hugs to my co-host, Trix, Natasha, honey and soy! Hope you girls had a great birthday and loads to eat and receive many pressies. And also thanks to Trix, #iip, this event is mentioned on Epicurious – Read here. We are going INTERNATIONAL!

I made the eggs the night before I went to bed and hoping that when I wake up the next morning, everything will be fine. We went early to Victoria market to get our groceries this week. Nice and smooth traffic. It will get chaotic later as it’s Grand Finals day! I am not a big fan of AFL so every year, I stay clear of congested areas around Melbourne CBD & the MCG. Many has actually queued overnight to get seats in the stadium. They are expecting 100000 people in the stadium. It is a big day for many footie supporters. And this year, even I could feel the excitement in the air. It’s Collingwood vs St. Kilda. St. Kilda lost by a mere 12 points to Geelong last year. So can they beat the magpies this year and lift the cup. To the St. Kilda fans, this is huge. The last time they won the cup was in 1966 and it was against Collingwood. The Saints won by just one point. I am sure this will be a nail biting game.

Ok. Back to eggs and food. This is how much I love eggs. I get a tray and not cartons. So to be stuck in a egg situation is just not right. I LOVE EGGS!!! Don’t they look beautiful?

Tea eggs is known as a ‘poor man’s snack’ that is quite popular in China & Taiwan. You can’t have too many and it fills you up pretty quick. It is usually eaten cold but some like it warm. I am not fuss. I like mine as a complimentary dish with a mains or with noodles.

I had a box of quail eggs that I needed to use and so I thought it would work the same way. Right? I mean, they look great in this photo.

Ingredients:

  • 5 large hen eggs
  • 10 quail eggs
  • 150ml of soy sauce
  • 2tsp of brown sugar
  • 2tsp of salt
  • 2 bulbs of tou cha (Chinese black tea that has quite a nice earthy aroma and taste)
  • I cinnamon stick
  • 3 – 4 star anise
  • 1tsp of black pepper

And the spiced hen eggs look great too! Nice and dark shells.

Method:

  1. Gently boil the eggs in a pot. Hen eggs for about 3 -4 mins. Quail eggs takes about 1 – 2 mins
  2. Put in the eggs in cold water so that it easier to handle. Then gently crack the shells by using the back of a spoon
  3. Use a slow cooker. Add the water and all the other ingredients and allow it cook in low heat for about 5 or more hours. The longer it is, the more intense the flavours
  4. Eat it as a snack or have it with noodles or as a side dish
  5. For easy peeling, make sure the egg is still warm and not cold

The peeling process sucked! And I didn’t think the colour was rich enough and the crack lines weren’t deep enough. Gutted. Everything looks so prefect until I shelled the eggs. The quail eggs were so difficult to shell and I kept peeling off the egg white. Totally gutted. I have tweaked the method above to have longer steeping time. And I don’t advise using quail eggs. Still too painful and also it is too small to have nice patterns.

Shall have to attempt again. And never will I leave till the last minute to get a dish ready for this party. Stupid me.

So who won the AFL? It was a draw! This is such a weird game. The 2 teams will have to play again next week to determine the winner. Why isn’t there an extra time like soccer or tennis? It’s means more business for butchers, pubs. bars, MCG and bookies. Supporters will have to pay for tickets again. How about those that flew in from interstate? The last time a Grand Final drew was in 1977. See that devastation look on those faces? I want my weekend back please!
