I cannot believe that I have blogged about Hung Vuong in Footscray. With so many choices along Hopkins Street, this has been our preference lately. Maybe because it has heating in winter and air-condition in summer unless many of the older establishments. And also maybe because it has nice white light and better for taking photos!
I made my usual order of beef special combination. It is basically pho served with beef slices, beef sausage that is heavily laced with black pepper, tendons and thinly sliced tripes. The broth is quite heavily scented and flavoured with clove. MSG? Of course! But still a nice broth. The portions here are quite generous. As usual, I love topping it with bean sprouts, Vietnamese basil, a good squeeze of lemon with slices of fresh chill, chilli sauce, hoisin sauce and more chilli oil. Stir, combine and slurp! Pho is the best in winter! Comforting and somehow doesn’t make me feel too heavy after
Mister ordered the grilled chicken vermicelli. For me, this is more of a summer dish. It comes with a large serving of mint, sliced cucumber, pickled carrots, coriander, spring onions, white cabbage and crushed roasted peanuts. We will usually pour the nuoc cham (palm sugar, lime juice, finely minced chillies, fish sauce and water) dipping sauce over the vermicelli, mix and eat.
We also ordered 6 pieces of Vietnamese spring roll. I do prefer the spring rolls here. They are bigger in portion and I am assuming the oil is not reused too many times. Roll it with the cabbage, dunk into nuoc cham dipping sauce and pop into mouth. The skin is not oily but light. Sufficient filling to rolled skin.
Satisfying meal as usual. Mister and I headed for a movie, Splice, which had good reviews. It stars Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley. It’s about splicing of DNA of different animals to form a nice life form and cruel and mutated twist in the end. I am sure there will be part 2 but thought it was pretty average. It was somewhat disturbing but definitely not horrifying. Don’t be fooled by the trailer!
Anyway, check out what other fellow bloggers have to say
